Newborn sleeps well and soundly but when she IS awake she is crying.

Always. Like she's uncomfortable. But if this were the case she wouldn't sleep as well as she does right? She isn't ever awake and content (she's 5 weeks). anyone else experience this?

  • Sounds like colic.  My first dd was like that until 3.5 months.  Every db is different, but for us the techniques in the video The Happiest Baby on the Block were very helpful.  We also used the Miracle Blanket for an unbreakable swaddle, which she found very comforting.

  • Sounds like my DD.  Great sleeper, but so cranky while awake.  She was really only happy when I (not anyone else) was holding or nursing her. Do you have a side to side swing?  That helped a bit.  It will pass though, DD was great by about 4 months.  Enjoy the sleep!

  • DD is like that.  She was the easiest baby for about the first month and was great during the day (but wasn't awake much at that point).  At about 6 weeks, she was always crying when she was awake.  She's better if we're holding her, she's swaddled, or in her swing.  We did figure out that she has reflux and is pretty sensitive to dairy when I eat it, so I've cut that out.  The zantac and cutting out dairy has helped a lot.  She still has her moments, but she's getting better.  Once she's asleep, she's out, but when she's awake, she's pretty fussy.

Good luck, I hope it gets better for you soon!

  • Yep.  That was my life for 5 months.  She screamed every waking hour and then slept a good 5 hour stretch at night from her first night home plus had multiple long naps.

Swaddling worked wonders. . . and time.
