Longer stretches at night?

Let me start by saying that I'm not really complaining bc I think they have been great sleepers since the beginning... (We've never really gotten up more than once a night to feed them with the exception of several really early wake-ups, like 5am). My mo/ di boys are 10 weeks and are now FF. We give them a bottle around 7pm and put them down for the night (they were in RnPs in our room but we just built their cribs and put them in those last night; we swaddle in sleep sacks and use white noise). We wake them at 10:30 pm and feed them before we go to sleep. Then they usually wake up sometime between 2/2:30ish (one starts fussing and I get them both up and tandem bottle feed). They go right back down no problem. Then they are up some time around 6am (sometimes as early as 5am or as late as 7am if we are lucky). So what it boils down to is that we get approx 4 hour stretches at night. I'm wondering when I'm going to get those 5-6 hour stretches I read that they should now be capable of??? It's never the same twin that wakes... It seems totally random. Most of their bottles are around 4oz and they usually eat 7x per day including MOTN feeding. They are 37 weekers, so I guess technically you could say they are 7 weeks adjusted. Thoughts? DD has always been a great sleeper but it took us 9 months to break her of
the MOTN feeding. So, last night was their first night in their cribs and they woke at 1:30a and had totally broken free from their swaddles and then again at 5:30am same thing. So, not a bad first night but not better! Sorry so long!

Re: Longer stretches at night?

  • My girls are probably about 15 weeks. They are still in swaddles/rock n play. They are also 90% FF. I would say in the last 5-6 weeks they dropped their one MOTN feeding. They used to eat at 10PM and then at 2 then 6 AM. The 2AM was finished around 10 weeks. Now they are eating around 8PM, get swaddled and sleep until 6AM.

My girls were 36 weekers and their formula intake is on the low side. I struggle to get in 20 ounces a day. They only take bottles 5 times a day now. They have almost tripled their birthweight so even though they average 18 ounces a day they are growing.

I am dreading the transition to the crib because I think it will mess up the great sleep habits we have going. And I plan on swaddling them until they are old enough to sleep on their stomached. Maybe try the magic sleep suit if they are breaking out of their swaddles. That was a lifesaver for me with my older daughter.

Yes, this is what I'm talking about! Sounds like your schedule was just like ours but now your girls sleep 10 hours?!? Awesome! I'm sure we will get there. Every time it's seems like they are going longer, then it gets shorter again! We used the zipadeezip with my DD once she started breaking out of her swaddle but that was not until after 4/4.5 months. Same concept, makes them feel secure. I'm almost embarrassed to say that she's over two now and still sleeps in one. But she's a rockstar sleeper, so who cares. :) We never used a RnP with DD, so I'm def nervous about the transition. They would not nap in their cribs today... But just put them down for the night and all is quiet so we will see. What do you use to swaddle your girls? We use the Halo sleep sacks. Can't believe they are already breaking free!!!
  • Not to be a Debbie downer but my boys are almost 8 months and they still both wake up 2-3 times a night. I've tried different nap times, cry it out, sound machine.. I think they're bodies are used to waking up that often so even though they aren't technically hungry, they still wake. I get maybe 3 hrs of uninterrupted stretches. The weird thing is when they were 8 weeks they slept from 10-6 or 7am without waking. I would love for them to go back to that!! Sorry I don't really have any advice, just wanted to weigh in. Good luck! Also you could try only swaddling their lower half and leave their arms out. When my boys started breaking free every night I did that and they didn't seem affected.

  • I got some good stretches out of them from 3mo-6mo. They were doing 11p-6a regularly. Then it all went to shit and they were up every 3hrs again from 6mo-11mo. Maybe around 9mo, I'd let the one who was the more frequent waker fuss for a bit before going in and H would try to soothe first (I BF, no formula) but no real hardcore CIO or anything. They stopped waking right around 11mo and STTN again. I'm sure they'll stop sleeping so well once they start getting molars, or get sick, or something.

Sleep has never been a one way street w any of my kids. Sure some nights go well, but others suck. Just bc they've started sleeping long stretches doesn't mean they won't ever regress. Hell, my 4yo still doesn't STTN w any regularity, never has, and we've done everything under the sun to get him to sleep. He just doesn't need it - he's never slept 12 consecutive hours in his entire life. I admit I'm more than a bit jaded about sleep since having to deal w all of his issues, but I just don't sweat the hours anymore.

  • Starting at ~8weeks my di/di boys go down around 8 after their bottle. They both will wake around 2:30 (sometimes 1:30, sometimes 3:30), and again around 5:30-6, then one wakes at 7 and the other at 8.

We do bath before bed, but no swaddle. They are still in their RnPs in our room though. (I hope to crib them after my brother's wedding when their room will be free of guests). I used to do a dream feed but stopped because one time I feel asleep and they slept through it.

They are now almost 14 weeks and still wake up those two times to eat. I haven't tried any methods to change it though, so I am really not helpful at all.

  • Night two in their cribs and we were up at 1am bc C had broken out of his swaddle. I was able to rock him a while and he went back to sleep til. 2:30, so that was good. Then B was up at 5am (they both ate at 2:30). He had broken out of his swaddle. Ugh. The whole sleep schedule/ training thing is so chaotic with two! Thanks for all your input. Again, I know I shouldn't really complain... More just looking for other's experiences. :)

We got lucky I think, my 12 week old twins started sleeping through the night about a week ago. They are in their cribs, on the stomach (gasp!). It was always our chubby boy that woke up, so I would wake the other up - the first night he slept, she did. They eat around 7pm, are in bed by 8, and wake them up between 530 and 630am. They are both on formula, he eats 5-6oz bottles a day, and she eats 5-5oz bottles a day (on a good day)
  • I use halo sleep sacks too. In another 4 or 5 weeks I am going to transition them to the crib with magic sleep suits. Those suits worked wonders with my daughter. My girls to sleep 8-10 hours at night but they do grunt/make noise and need their pacifiers put back in. They don't cry or need to eat during those 8-10 hours though.

No, but I've thought about it. I'm scared that if I don't, they will be up at 12am and 4am... Is that the first feeding to go or the MOTN feeding? I don't remember exactly what happened with DD but I think her bedtime just kept getting earlier and there was no 10:30 feeding, just MOTN.
