Meal Ideas for Baby (Table foods)

edited July 2014 in September 2013 Moms
I'm sure this has been done before but I'm struggling with meal ideas for DD and I feel like I'm so behind on giving her new tastes.

As of now she's only had diced banana, plum & mango (also some big pieces in the mesh feeder), cubed cheese, yogurt, pouches & recently we gave her some whole wheat toast with butter/cream cheese.

She's tried ground beef but no matter what I couldn't get her to swallow, she'd just pocket the crumbles until I had to fish them out.

What does your daily meals look like for LO? (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner & Snacks)

Edit - I'm talking more table food than purees.

Re: Meal Ideas for Baby (Table foods)

  • I'm having the same problem. I'm just starting to get into giving her more finger foods and feel lost. We dont have any set meals just yet but I have given her little round cooked pasta coated in whatever puree I had on hand in the freezer (squash, carrot, etc) to get in some veggies and give pasta some flavors. We've also tried mandarin oranges, rice, and cooked celery. Tomorrow we are going to try pancakes for breakfast. Also, for a little snack when it's hot outside, I've given her homemade Popsicles (apple, banana, kale, and prune) which she loves.

We do either oatmeal with a little cinnamon or fruit for breakfast. She loves cantaloupe, banana, watermelon, and strawberries. I give her pretty big pieces and let her "bite"off what she wants. She does pretty well with this.
For lunch, we usually do 1 fruit and 1 veggie puree.
For dinner, she eats just about whatever we eat. Meat I tear into smallish pieces that she can pick up and "chew". Green beans (canned) I give her whole, Like they come from canning. Most other stuff is in bites for her long as she can pick it up.

I will say she usually won't take anymore food until she has swallowed what is in her mouth and we only have 1.5 teeth. They only things she hasn't had is fish, shellfish, eggs, peanut butter and things that are choking hazards (nuts, grapes, hotdogs, ect)
I saw a post on Aug13 that is talking about foods and linked to this page which I thought had some good ideas.

    Eta: She hasn't had honey!
  • For breakfast we do toaster French toast sticks or mini waffles. We give them to him whole and he munches on them.

Then for lunch and dinner we just give him small pieces of what we are eating as long as it's not too greasy. He snacks on crackers and yogurt. Oh cottage cheese is another thing that we either do for a snack or part of the meal.

  • @Af1004‌ great link, thanks!

  • I'm following this thread. DS has had slices of cantaloupe, zucchini, apples. He has had diced banana, avocado, peaches (he couldn't hold on to the slices) he has had toast, scrambled egg and pancakes but he's allergic to those. He has had peas. I give him some kind of more solid food at each meal. Then a purée. We have been trying to have 3 meals a day but so far it's just been 2. He nurses on demand. He also gets puffs and the plum teething biscuits.
  • Breakfast she does either kiwi and mango slices or banana along with her oatmeal. Lunch varies, cottage cheese, pasta, home made soup or stew. I've been making soups for her, chicken noodle, and a thicker one with ground beef, carrots, onions, celery, potatoes and pasta noodles ) I just pour it on her tray and she shovels it in. Dinner is usually always a protein ( fish, chicken or beef ) and steamed veggies or whatever we are eating as long as it's healthy. Snacks are usually puffs, yogurt bites, apple sauce or yogurt.
  • @jnetx‌ how are you serving the raisins? I don't want to cause alarm but you need to cut them instead of serving whole. They can cause problems on the exit. My friends son pooped a whole grape and she freaked out once they realized the raisin had rehydrated. That might have been a one in a million situation but it could happen again.

    If you are already cutting them than please ignore me! 8-}

  • Mostly she eats whatever we eat, just cut up.

Breakfast: Cheerios and yogurt melts while I'm making something. She may have scrambled egg and biscuit or pancakes. She loves strawberries. I cut off the stem, and then cut it in half, then slice them from top to bottom.

Lunch: Cut up chicken, something with rice, any type of meat she will eat.

    Dinner: Whatever we're eating.

She is done with purees. Will not eat them. Also, she will not eat anything off her baby spoon. I can feed her the same thing off a regular spoon and she'll eat it. This is how I feed her things made with rice or anything else that cannot be picked up by hand easily. She can also eat off a fork.

We have been slow on the food train because DS has some allergies, but we are making progress.

Breakfast:  oatmeal w/fruit puree and cinnamon
snack:  usually a finger food like diced avocado, banana, pear, watermelon and some puffs
lunch:  a good amount of veggie puree and a little fruit puree
snack:  more finger foods plus small amount of veggie puree (hopefully soon we'll have more veggie finger foods he can eat)
dinner:  protein (ground chicken or lentils right now, hoping to add to this soon), pureed veggie, and usually some finger foods

    • Lentils- have been really great for us, we originally pureed but now just stir around a little
    • We're in the process of adding in soy yogurt (he's allergic to milk protein)
    • ground meat has been great... it crumbles but we had to mix it with a "sauce" (veggie puree) to get DS to eat it at first

  • @amief I'm just curious, how did you find out your DS had a milk protein allergy?

  • We have started giving ds whatever we are eating within reason. The other night he had tiny bits of ham steak and macaroni and cheese. Tonight he had tomato soup. For breakfast he will eat oatmeal, eggs, waffles, fruit, or yogurt.

  • LO eats what ever we eat as long as it's healthy. He'll eat anything but doesn't always swallow and just chews forever. H will let him take a sip of water from a cup and that gets him to swallow his chewed food.
  • @amief‌ Are you breastfeeding? Formula? DS also has cow's milk protein allergy. What are you going to switch him to when you move off formula/breast milk?
