Trouble TTC

Clomid doing its job or false positive?

I was given 50mg Clomid to take on CD 3-7 and told to follow OPK instructions of when to start testing. CD 8, tested with strips and got negative. CD9 got what I thought was positive, but wasn't sure so got CBD OPK test. That gave me a smiley face with 2 lines when I removed the strip. This is my first round of Clomid so I have not tested or tracked before to know when I should be ovulating in my cycle, or if I even do. Is this positive Clomid doing its job or a false positive due to the Clomid? I assumed since CD 8 was negative, that CD 9 test was accurate. I tested again CD 12 and got positive on OPK strip but negative on CBD. Has anyone else had this issue?

No, I'm not being monitored. OB just said use OPK to see if get positive result to see if dosage is correct. What would monitoring consist of?

  • I've never taken clomid, so take this with a grain of salt, but I've read that OPKs aren't always accurate when you're using clomid. Ditto what the other ladies have said about being monitored by a doctor.

  • Sorry for all those confusing test results! Clomid certainly is a wonder drug when it comes to side effects and challenges. :(

Taking Clomid, even just 50mg doses, can totally cause many follicles to develop, putting you at risk for implantation of dangerous numbers of embryos. The only way to make sure you aren't at risk to be the next octomom is having regular ultrasound monitoring before IUI.

Clomid also often thins the lining of the uterus to the point that an embryo couldn't implant anyways. It can happen the first cycle, and it can also be a cumulative effect that can get so bad that women have to take time off TTC to treat it.

Also, without monitoring, if unfortunately you don't get pregnant this cycle, your doctor would never know the right dosage to give you next time and would just be guessing.

Please ask for monitoring, and/or (preferably) work with an RE who can make sure you get the safest and most effective treatments that fit your body.

Thank you for all of your responses and thoughts on this. It's so confusing sometimes. I have just been using regular digital OPK tests, not advanced CBD. Would that make a difference? And should I continue using OPKs until I get a true positive? My OB also gave me progesterone to start CD 17 and I'm supposed to go in CD 27 for pregnancy test. I'm definitely not looking to be the next octomom so I think I'll call on Monday. That will be CD 14 though so will u/s still be done? My concern though is that my co-pay every time I go in is $65 and that can add up with all the appointments, OPKs and prescriptions.

  • I definitely have had what I considered to probably be false positive OPK's while on Clomid but I thought it might have actually been because of the trigger shot.  I just pretty much thought that OPK's were useless for me while on a monitored cycle.

I just think it's so irresponsible when regular OB's prescribe Clomid and then don't monitor their patients.  Like others said, there are so many risks (HOM, cysts, etc).  If my regular OB/GYN had advocated for me to get Clomid through her (without monitoring) I might have gone with it at first (before I knew how important it was to be monitored).  But I'm very thankful that my GYN had me get an RE referral before starting Clomid!

    TTC #1 since Jan 2013
    First appointment with RE 10/2013.
    April 2014 - Clomid 100mg CD3-7.  HCG shot CD10 IUI #1 done on 4/12/14 (CD12) ....BFN
May 2014 - Break cycle to repeat saline sonogram and re-group.  Travel to Kauai 5/7-5/12 (Yay!!)
    June 2014 - Clomid 150mg CD4-8.  HCG shot CD14.  IUI#2 done on 6/9 and 6/10 (CD15-16) w/ Prometrium suppositories during TWW .... BFN
    July 2014 - Clomid 150mg CD3-7.  Ultrasound CD12 - 4 mature follies! HCG trigger shot CD12 AM.  IUI#3 on CD13 w/ Prometrium suppositories during TWW ....BFN
July 2014 - Repeat ultrasound done to measure size of fibroid - 8x9cm (the size of a grapefruit!) Surgery referral made.
August 2014 - MRI done which revealed 2 fibroids: a 13x15cm fibroid as well as an 8x7cm one.  Super freak out mode over surgery plan.  OB-GYN/surgeon said surgery would most likely have to be a laparotomy (open abdominal surgery)
August 2014 - After a 2nd opinion, plan to take Lupron x 2 months to shrink fibroids then laparoscopic/robotic myomectomy.  Surgery date is set for Nov 21st!
November 2014 - Robotic myomectomy done (2 large fibroids removed, mild endo found).  Benched x 3 months

    PAIF/SAIF welcome
  • We'll see what my dr has to say. I've continued testing and have gotten a few negatives so I am hoping that if the positives I got before were the false positives due to Clomid, I'll see a true positive soon.

On Clomid I didn't even ovulate until CD 21-26, so taking progesterone on CD 17 would have been like birth control for me. Please go to a RE and get proper monitoring both for your health and so that you're more like to actually get pregnant.
