Whole cows milk transition coming up...

I can't believe my LO is 10 months & trying to run. Before we know it we will be celebrating their first bdays!! So when the time comes to transition to whole cows milk. I was interested to see how ppl did it.... Do u just start giving a lil milk a day with formula for the rest of the day? And just gradually do more and more?

Re: Whole cows milk transition coming up...

  • Thanks. Same here. No one has really said. I didn't think u just all the sudden switch it all together

A lot of the ladies in my mom's group started at 11 months and were fully transitioned at a year.

  • I do half and half bottles at 11.5 months and gradually increase the amount of milk every two days or so she gets used to the taste. Then at 12 mo the goal is no more bottles and just sippy cups. Neither of my girls were/ are attached to the bottle do it shouldn't be an issue I'm hoping with DD2.

  • My pedi said to make the switch at 11 months which I thought was odd, but it looks like some pp did that. I'm planning to just slowly add it into his bottles of bm. He takes 5 ounces per feeding so I plan to give 4 oz bm and 1 oz wcm and slowly up the ratio until we are fully transitioned.

  • We will not be introducing WCM (allergies) we will be continuing to BF for as long as my supply holds. Am I the only one?
  • Is it weird that I really don't picture DD being completely on sippy cups by the age of 1? I can barely get her to drink 1/2 an ounce of water in her sippy cup. I don't think I'll aim t wean her off of the bottle by 1 but definitely formula. We will be transitioning to WCM probably around 11.5mo and like PP's, we will do it over the course of a few weeks. I think I'll focus on eliminating bottles by the time she's 14mo max. Then again, my friend's son was completely dependant on the bottle until the age of 2 to the point where he would barely even eat any food unless he had his bottle first and they were still giving him formula. I guess her thinking was since he doesn't eat food, he needs to get his calories from somewhere. I seriously worry about this happening with DD, lol.

I'm also very confused/unsure about what this will look like for is. For starters, LO won't drink from a sippy. Secondly, I feel like id rather just continue to BF. Or do people BF and do WCM at the same time? I plan to let LO self wean, so I just don't know how all of this will/should play out. As rough as BFing has been at times, I feel strangely sad that it may be ending soon.

  • DS has a hard time with a sippy cup also. I offer him water at meals. When school starts back I'll send breastmilk in a bottle. He can have water in a sippy with his meals. I think I may send a sippy with coconut milk to go with his snack. But I can't use coconut milk as a breastmilk replacement because it doesn't have the same nutritional requirements. I am worried he will go back to his old pattern of barely eating all day then nursing all night. I have a lot of mixed feelings about continuing to breastfeed but both of DS doctors have recommended that i continue I don't see how I could justify (to myself) stopping at this point. However I bet if they had told me to stop I would be really upset too. I guess in my head the process would just occur gradually and naturally. :)
  • How does everyone's LO do with the sippy cups? Can they hold them by themselves? E can hold it, but doesn't quite get that he needs to tip it. But he's never bottle fed himself since we don't do bottles at home and they feed them at daycare so I'm wondering if that's the problem?

My LO dos not do great with his sippy cup.  Just like your son he holds it some but struggles a bit with tipping it up to feed himself.  But he can feed himself a bottle with no problem.  An even bigger problem is that he wants to slam and throw his sippy cup off the highchair.  Usually I just hold it and he takes a sip.  He really does not drink much out of it though.

My LO has no problem with the sippy. I introduced it at 6 months and around 9 months she started drinking all by herself. She's still learning how to use the straw and has been successful a few times. My LO has always been bottle fed yet funnily enough has never drank the bottle by herself.

  • @dhaueisen‌ I guess I didn't look at it from the angle of providing WCM during meal time, BM/BF at others. That makes more sense. In my head I was thinking only of replacing her BM bottles.

She won't drink from a sippy or 360 cup, but will from her Doidy cup if we help her hold it (otherwise she pours the whole thing on her face and up her nose). She LOVES drinking out of cups. She hasn't gotten the hang of straws, either.

  • LO does good from a sippy. And we found out. On accident when he swiped his sisters soda that had a lid and straw that he can drink from a straw. Lol. He is so fast. I was shocked that he knew how to suck the straw. Of course he only had a tiny drink of sprite. Lol. This week he has started walking everywhere and learned how to open and flush the toilet! He keeps us busy! I've been thinking of giving him a lil wcm soon. Just a lil everyday.
  • DS2 is already drinking a little WCM, DS1 has sippy cups of milk every day and DS2 is always thieving them LOL, he doesn't get much, as he doesn't tip the sippy cup far enough most of the time. All his nutrition is still from BF but he get sips and loves it, he gets way more from a straw cup.

I am just starting to give him a straw cup at meals with milk, he loves it, although we waited until 1 yr for DS1 I will probably do the same thing with DS2, start giving milk at meals, then, once he gets it and drinks more than he spills LOL, all his non nap feeds will be WCM, then he can BF before and after naps and bedtime, until he self weans (DS1 self weaned at 14 1/2 months) or my milk dries up.

  • @Salemkitty13‌ we may keep bfing too. Specialist said to introduce dairy slowly at 11 months and if he can't tolerate to go to dairy free formula and try wcm again at 15 months. We can't afford the formula so I will pump bm to send with him to daycare and nurse him at home. I'm really hoping he tolerates dairy though because finding a place to pump and store milk at school will be tricky. Also as long as he can't have dairy and is bfing I can't have dairy either. Mama misses pizza and lattes! !
  • @Albertsgirl1982‌ I hope your LO tolerates dairy soon :) I hear you, this mama is in need of some ice cream!
Do you teach? Or are you taking classes?
  • @Salemkitty13‌ I will be starting a nursing program.
  • @Albertsgirl1982‌ Thats great. Good luck! :)
