Cloth Diapering

Rlr

Is I have developed ammonia in some onvernight stuff. I hot water stripped and it did little to no good. Actually I think I just spread the ammonia to everything. So tonight while dd is sleeping and DH is on a fishing trip, I am going to try the rlr I got today. This is the attack plan.

Natural fibers
Pre wash with detergent
Wash with rlr, detergent and calgon
Rinse, rinse, rinse,

I'm going to try and only use hot water, but my machine only has cold rinse so I have to be quick to change it. Do you think this will work, if so do I will repeat with the microfiber. But do i need to strip the cover and pockets shells?

Re: Rlr

  • I don't have access to RLR, but I'm assuming that the plan you have is starting with dirty diapers? In which case I would do this:

    - Your normal wash routine
    - Strip with RLR (I have never seen anyone combine it with detergent or Calgon, much less both at once)
    - Rinse until you are satisfied that you have gotten out as much residue as you can.

I don't think you need to strip the covers and shells, unless you are worried that ammonia is sticking to your pocket lining. Still, it would make things easier and probably wouldn't hurt to just leave them in with the rest of the load.

  • I just did an RLR strip, and did what freezorburn described. It seemed to work for some dipes but not all...definitely didn't work for my overnight dipes. The rash keeps coming creeping back. :( I just ordered some Funk Rock to try.

  • Overnight diapers might need a longer soak or multiple strips.
  • Well, i fell asleep last night with everything in the dryer. This am everything smells great! Even smelled good coming out of the washer! I am going to leave dd in sposies or naked for part of the day today; as she got a little ammonia burn yesterday. Thanks for the input! I'll let you know how it turned out once she is back in them. Monday I should be getting two more TT so that should help rotate my night time diapers!

Last night dd slept in one of the newly stripped night time diapers. She woke up smelling like ammonia. I know it's just the night time inserts. Thirsties hemp insets and applecheeks 3layer bamboo insets. I think it's just the hemp that still have ammonia. So instead of running a huge load of laundry for only six total insets, what if I just tryed boiling the inserts with a little rlr? I would then rinse by hand a few times then send them thru the wash with the rest of my diapers. Do you think boiling with rlr will work? If I don't fix this soon I may just have to use sposies a night. I can't stand her having pink parts ever morning!

  • It's normal for an ON diaper to smell like ammonia by morning. It's only a problem if it is building up and causing a rash.

  • She was pink again this morning, not as bad as before. She normally just has normal flesh tones, and I could smell the ammonia when I picked her up, thru the diaper, pj's, and sleep sack.
