Don't hate me. (Poop question)

I know poop colour and consistency changes with solid foods but DD has had really dark poops lately. Like a really dark grey. Anyone else? I miss the non smelly yellow BF poops. She's fully formula fed now as well except for MOTN feedings. Don't mind the iPad formatting.

  • My LO loves blueberries... they make for some pretty dark, disgusting diapers!

  • When we started solids DS stool turned dark and harder. We give iron supplements now. I think the iron in his cereal caused it at first and now the supplements. Formula is fortified with iron so maybe that's it.
  • Nope - no iron supplements. I was thinking maybe the formula as well. I'm known for googling everything and some of the reasons for dark stool worried me (blood in the stool). I give her a half jar of prunes everyday to keep her stools softer. I'm wondering if that is what is making them dark? Even when I give her orange foods they are still dark though. I guess that could be because she has a variety of foods.

  • A IRL friend just had a scare of black poop and her dr said to smear some on a white piece of paper. Like you saw black could mean blood. But most times it is really just dark and not truely black.

  • My LO has had dark patches in his now too.  It looks almost like chocolate chips.  I was a little concerned but he has no other symptoms that something could be wrong.  Sometimes it is not dark so I think it is all of these new foods.  I also think it might be really dark brown not black.  I will have to try the white paper trick.

  • I'll have to try the white paper trick as well. From what I gathered online, blood stools are normally truly black (similar to meconium). I'm almost positive DD's are just dark brown but it freaks me out a little. I have read that brown - dark brown is a good sign that their digestive system is doing what it needs to be doing. I think I just get freaked out because I figured if she eats something orange, her stool should be orange. I guess that was only the case when she only ate one jar of carrots per day instead of eating a whole array of things.
