Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone taking Metformin?

My OBGYN recently prescribed me metformin.  Based on my blood work, my A1C results put me in the pre-diabetic range & he thinks this could be a reason why we haven't gotten pregnant yet.  Also my parents are both diabetics, so I am predisposed.

I asked my OBGYN about losing some weight, I'm 5'11 and weigh 180; I don't think I'm overweight, but I could stand to lose 5-10 pounds.  He said that may help, but he's not 100% sure.  Of course I have not told my parents that we are TTGP so I cannot ask them about the potential side effects of metformin.  I'm so skeptical about taking it, I got it filled, but the warning label is scaring the shit out of me.  It specifically says severe vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration.

Has anyone taken metformin? If so, for how long and what kind of side effects did you have?  I have the regular version, not extended release btw.  The dosage is to take 1 per night with dinner, then increase to 2 per night after 2 weeks.

Re: Anyone taking Metformin?

  • I'm also on Metformin for PCOS, although mine is the ER. I take 1500 MG daily, and I take it right before I go to bed.
The diarrhea is rough for a while. Certain foods make it worse. For me, those foods are rice, pasta, red meat and sometimes ice cream. It does get better. I haven't had aNY trouble with dehydration, but if you're worried about it, just make sure you're drinking a lot of water.
    Good luck!

  • Thanks @mlal78 did it at all make you nauseous or make you vomit?  I'm looking to avoid that for now lol.....I can handle bowel explosion if it's not almost instant.  I have lots of stomach trouble as it is so bowel explosion wouldn't be out of the ordinary for me sadly.  I will definitely invest in some more imodium, sounds like I may need it.
  • I have been taking 1000mg / day for 3.5 years now for PCOS. When I first started it did give me a little bit of (occasional) diarrhea for a few weeks but then it got better. I went off it during 2nd and 3rd trimesters when I was pregnant with my son, and when I went to restart it after delivery it messed with my stomach more. I asked to be switched to the extended release version and it is a lot easier on my stomach now.
