Parenting after a Loss

Swimming Atire Question

Baby Boots has his first swimming lesson tomorrow. Here's the guidelines they give for swimwear:

In addition, children who are not potty trained will

need a swim diaper and rubber pants. Disposable diapers will not be allowed because they restrict movement, become

very heavy with water and are likely to fall apart.

We have a reusable swim diaper (Swimmis) and we have swim trunks for him but I'm not sure what they mean by 'rubber pants'? Also, by disposable diapers surely they mean they don't allow disposable swim diapers? No one would actually try to use a regular disposable diaper in a pool. . would they?? Not that it matters. Just befuddled by the rubber pants thing.

Re: Swimming Atire Question

  • I've never heard of rubber swim pants...they sound pretty uncomfortable. I would go with a swim diaper and his swim trunks.
And yes, I think some people do use regular disposables at the pool (crazy)...usually when places have a specific, written rule like that it's because some morons actually put their kid in a regular diaper...or no diaper at all @-) eww!

  • Yeah I would think wearing a swim diaper plus diaper cover is going to be really restrictive. Hmmm.

  • You should be fine with your your reusable since it probably already has a cover on it. MG is right. By rubber cover they mean the ones that would go over cloth diapers. I know Gerber makes some but you would probably have to order them offline that small.

  • Yeah I have no clue what rubber pants are lol

When P took swim class at our Y, he was required to wear a swim diaper and swimming trunks.
  • I'm sure they mean regular disposable diapers aren't allowed.  Unfortunately they have to spell these things out because stupid people would try to take a baby in a regular diaper I am sure.

I agree with the others, rubber pants are the rubber undies that went over cloth diapers years ago.  Honestly I think whoever wrote this was either just older, or the memo itself is out of date because I am not even sure they make rubber pants anymore.

I bought LO a swim suit last week and asked the cashier if the swim diaper was enough, if I also needed rubber pants and she said it is enough, they don't even sell rubber pants.  I guess maybe you could find them online, but I figure if BBB doesn't sell them, they're not necessary because they have everything under the sun.

Just a tip, don't change LO into his swim diaper until you are there and ready to swim.  Unless I am mistaken swim diapers only hold in the poop, they don't absorb pee, or don't absorb as well, as regular diapers which is why they don't bulk up and get heavy in the water.

Rubber pants were the CDs when we were babies! I agree with PPs he should be fine with a swim diaper and trunks. We just use an unstuffed pocket because I'm too cheap to buy an actual swim diaper. I'm guessing the requirements were either written by someone older or they are just really outdated. I was looking into swim lessons for Z and the place we looked at said no disposable swim diapers. I guess it's becoming common for pools to require cloth swim diapers.
    Hey that's smart!

Rubber pants are what my mom used to put over my CD...in 1976!

Most places would be fine with him in a rash guard, trunks, and a disposable swim diaper (or cloth/reusable equivalent).

Eta: A one peice would be fine, too...and easier for diaper changes!

  • Well we ended up putting him in his bummis swim diaper and swim trunks and it was fine no poops thank goodness! He had fun swimming but it was really crowded and loud so he had a hard time focusing on being in the water. But it was fun!
