C-sections

Question for C Section MaMas.

Hello, :)

I have a question.

I am having an elective c section for my first and was wondering. What happens if I go into labor before my c section? Will they make me go through a vaginal birth? I had my OB appointment a week ago and forgot to ask this question.

Thank you for your replys.

Even if your first was elective they most likely will haul you in for a c-section if you go into active labor.

Once you are a C they pretty much expect you to stay C... A vbac is more dangerous without them having more warning I would think and clear you for it

I am not saying a vbac is dangerous.... Just without clearance they may not want you to do that

Edited: did you change your post? If not I read it wrong. They will probably make you wait in line and vaginal delivery if there isn't a opening for a csection if this is your first baby.
  • It depends in your hospital and doctor. I was worried about this too so I asked and the answer was that I would have still had my CS.

However for me this was a RCS - elective but my hospital supports vbac, I just had zero desire to have one.

  • Thank you for your comments. When I talked to my doctor he was up for whatever I wanted so I am assuming he will do the CS reguardless. I have no desire for a VB in any way, so I tend to worry.

I had scheduled c- secs after the first surgery with my DD. I went into labour both times and they got me checked in and into am operating room fairly quickly. In both consecutive pregnancies, my son was breech and with the twins, DS was breech and DD was transverse.

  • Don't listen to anyone else who tries to tell you how to give birth!  There are pros and cons with both methods and a lot of OBGYNs choose elective c-sections for themselves so you are in good company.  I am scheduled for a c-section and my doctor told me that if I go into labor early I just need to explain to the front desk that I am scheduled for a c-section and have already discussed it with my specialist and that is what they will do for me on the day.  I would imagine it will be the same for you.  Good luck!

  • I had an emergency cs with my 1st...I then had a scheduled cs for my 2nd went into labor...I was asked if I wanted to attempt delivery or go with the planned cs...Speaking from experience with my 1st I labored 1 day + then was unable to have her then had a cs I would have a cs any day! Totally your decision! Best of luck!
  • While I don't understand why someone would choose to have a major surgery over a vaginal birth, if it is something you and your drs have agreed on, then most likely if you go Into labor on your own you would be taken to the OR. The only reason I see for that NOT happening is if there were a lot of emergency cs that day and the rooms were full.

  • My baby was breech, so we planned for a C-section (but ended up pushing the surgery earlier due to a few weeks with elevated blood pressure). If I HAD gone into labor naturally, they were just going to call my doctor and do the C-section right away.

  • Yikes! I am STILL dealing with muscle pains three months later. Have fun with that recovery, OP! I *thought* I knew what to expect, but had no idea how painful it would be. It was worth it because I got my son, but if I had a choice it would have been a lot different!

  • If you went into labor prior to your scheduled date, you would just call your OB and show up at the hospital.
More urgent sections would go ahead of you (those threatening the safetey and health of mom and/or baby) so you may have to wait a little in labor.

This would be true even on your scheduled date.  Sometimes if L and D is really busy they may reschedule your section to the next day, unless you are already in labor.

The only reason that I can think of that you would deliver vaginally would be if you progressed to quickly to get to OR, such as the baby's head was already crowning, then they would probably encourage you to continue vaginal delivery.  Rarely happens with first time moms, but ANYTHING is possible.

  • Totally late to this party, but hey.  I labored for roughly 30 hours before my ecs with lo.  I had a relatively easy recovery; the catheter removed and was walking around 12 hours later.  This time around I am having a rcs.  I was told if I go into labor before my scheduled date was to call L&D immediately and go in.  They will fit me in when they can.

  • Wow- there are some pretty judgmental comments here!  If she wants a C-section that's her choice to make.  To answer the question, my guess is it will depend on the hospital, which dr. is on call, if your dr. can be there, and how busy it is.  Definitely a question for your dr.

    Um.....shut up
  • I had a scheduled RCS and went into labor the day before.  Went to the hospital at 4-5min apart contractions, but was only 1cm dilated, so they gave me the option to go home or I could just have my section then.  We chose the section, there was one other patient about to give birth, so we just had to wait for her to deliver.  Good luck and I highly recommend getting a belly binder, it helped a lot with my recovery for my second.
  • No one should judge anyone for choosing a C-section, a natural birth, a home birth, an epidural, or whatever.  There are many many reasons for making whatever choice YOU choose to make for your birth.  No one knows you, your body, your emotional state, better than you, so don't listen to the judgments of anyone else.  The only person you should really listen to on this issue is your doctor.  Good luck and enjoy your little one!

Yes, because I'm sure this will totally be the experience for every single woman who has a csection!
I believe opinions were asked for, not a generalization. This was my experience. Yours may be different. Poster should do what makes her comfortable.

  • OP - I had an amazing experience with my c-section. I labored for 20 hours beforehand and was just not progressing. I was 40w5d and scheduled for an induction the next day.

Recovery was a breeze. Stayed 3 nights in the hospital (insurance covered 4 but I was ready to go) and had no pain, just mild discomfort. I even walked home from the hospital.

I'm currently 19w6d pregnant with a baby girl and planning an RCS, hopefully for 39w1day.

Good luck and please know that not all c-section experiences and recoveries aren't terrible :)
