HFMD - in adults?

I know I've read adults can get HFM, but has anyone on here had experience with it? DS came down with it a week ago and now almost all blisters are gone. Yesterday I woke up with a RAGING sore throat, monster headache, fever, chills, no energy. I felt awful. Went to urgent care last night bc my throat hurt so bad I was worried I had strep but that test came back negative. Dr seemed to think I got DS's virus but that it just presented itself differently in my body. Today I feel a lot better overall but my throat is still killing me and there are white spots all over (which is what also lead me to believe possibly strep yesterday). I did have ONE red spot pop up on my hand but that's it--and the spots in my mouth aren't red like DS's were. I just don't get it. Summer is supposed to be when we are all healthy!!! July so far has been miserable!

Re: HFMD - in adults?

  • Lol it's funny bc I called my pedi about this just this afternoon and brought it up at our girls nite out tonight. Apparently adults can get it depending upon ones immunity. I never knew...

  • When DD got it her pedi said that HFMD was like a cold and that there were multiple strains of it and if you hadn't had that particular strain you could catch it.  But like anything symptoms vary from person to person.  I was very lucky and did not catch it (I was like 5 mos pregnant so super nervous).
    Hope you feel better soon!
  • DS has had it twice, both times we didn't know because he only got blisters in his throat (plus the fever). Thank goodness neither of us has gotten it, but I hear it's awful for adults.  From what I've read HFM is one that is actually more common during the warmer months. Both times DS got it in the spring.

DS2 got a very mild case of it at 17 months.  I took him to the doctor for red, gooey eyes (he has eye issues) and while there I suddenly noticed a spot on his hand.  The pediatrician immediately looked in his mouth and saw 1 sore and broke the news to me.  Those are the only 2 "sores" I saw, besides his bottom, where he got a big pimply rash that fortunately didn't bother him.  He was only a little fussy in general.  Then DH caught it.  He said his hands hurt and he had sores all over them.  I told him he caught HFMD.  He got them on his feet and in his mouth, too.  He felt like death.  He ended up going to the dr. and getting antibiotics.  We know he had HFMD but he must have picked up something else right after, or else the "death like" feeling of HFMD coincidentally cleared up quickly after he got on antibiotics.  It really sucked!

I was told there are 2 strains of HFMD.  1 is much newer and is a lot more severe.  It's likely a lot of adults have not had it.

I've been getting sick about 6 times per year since DS2 was born.  It's ridiculous.  I feel your pain.  I'm currently on day 13 of a very bad "cold" type illness.  Never had one drag on like this.  Yeah and it's July, WTH!!!!

    Yup, you have it.
I had it when my dd was an infant. Also in the summer. My symptoms were much worse than hers. My feet and hands were on fire for about a week. Terrible sore throat too. Hang in there!
  • Ugh I'm so pissed!!!! Three days later and my throat is still KILLING ME. And now as of today..:it's hard to describe but my hands hurt. Not all over hurt but in specific pin point size spots. I have a few "bumps" that have popped up on my hands and I feel like I can point out every other spot on my hand where one will turn up. This is not supposed to happen on summer vacation! Blah. I really hope it only lasts a week for me like it did for DS. He is much better and all his spots have scabbed over or are already healed. But wow do I feel so bad for him last weekend when he was miserable! I can completely sympathize!

  • What's happening to you is exactly what happened to my DH. Unfortunately it's a very common summer illness :(
