Birth Classes for Mature Parents?

Has anyone had experience with birth classes for older parents? We are both 40, and this is hubby's first child so we would like to take a lamaze course together, but it would sure be nice to have that in common with our classmates. Has anyone found such classes, and or had a particularly good or disappointing experience with younger classmates?

Re: Birth Classes for Mature Parents?

  • We just took a condensed, one-day childbirth class (not method-specific). There were about 10 other couples of all ages. If I had to guess, at least two other couples were also late 30s or early 40s.

Our group had a good vibe, but we spent most of the day just working on the exercises as couples - not in groups.

  • Maybe check with your doctor's office? I'm 40 and DH is 45 and its our first. We're taking a course offered by the hospital that runs 3 nights. We just went to our first class and I would say 2 other couples besides us looked to be around 40 as well. The others I would guess ran from late 20's to 30's.  I was a bit concerned that we'd be the only ones with gray hairs in the room but we weren't. We found common ground quickly after we started talking about what everyone is worried about and what people know and don't know.  No snide remarks or stares were thrown our way.

  • We lucked out!  We requested a Saturday class (which is only offered as needed).  Apparently no one else in our town wanted a Saturday class, so we get our own personal class on Saturday.  That eliminates the nervousness my husband was feeling about being old enough to be the parents of half the attendees of our class.  :)

  • That's lucky, we had a choice of a week night every week for 9 weeks or nothing, so I found a more intense (hippy-ish) class that runs on a weekend and we can attend even though we both work long hours - and it sounds like I'm less likely to be there with the 16 year old mothers that had an oops.

  • I took a one day childbirth class with my husband. It was ok. There were all ages there so it was cool.

When I had my first we took a 6 weeks course (2 classes at week). I was 36 at that point and it was a pretty mixed age group. The experience was great. I made some new friends regarding of the age difference and we met a few times after for play dates with our children. Overall a really amazing experience and very bonding for us as a first time parents.
