Eating Sand?

Recently, Emmett has started eating the sand from his sand and water table. Not huge handfuls, but he'll grab some out of the water side and put it in his mouth.
I thought he would do it once and realize it was gross, but instead he wants to keep eating it.

Do you think this is just a weird little habit, or do you think I need to worry about it. I only say that because it reminds me of during pregnancy when they warned us about the urge to eat non-food items (pica maybe?!?) and how we should call our doctor. Maybe I'm over thinking this, but maybe not.

I am definitely not an expert but to me it sounds normal for a one year old.   My LO puts all kinds of stuff in his mouth.

I think it is pretty common for kids of this age to put sand in their mouth. A loves paper, tissue, sand and regular dirt. (Also pinecones, rocks and whatever she can find) I think as she gets older she will stop.

Nug put sand in her mouth all week long at the beach and I'm sure that was much more gross than the sand in your sensory table.

Normal!  Mine grabs dirt from my gardens and flower pots and puts it in his mouth all the time.. rocks too and gets mad when I take him away from it.

J ate a shit ton of sand at the beach last weekend. I assumed it was normal. His poops were like mud the next day but that was it. lol

I asked O's teacher about this since Owen had a handful he was trying to eat when I picked him up this week. She said sand is a favorite of the 1's classroom and they prefer rocks and dirt in the 2's classroom.
