How do you choose activities for kids?

Hello,

This fall we are expecting a baby, and we'll have a 2.5 year old. She'll be at a preschool two mornings a week, and I think having two other "open" park or playdate (or "nothing") days sounds nice since she seems to benefit from having time at home or just relaxed without rushing around. The last day, Fridays, I sort of want to do a music class with her, but there is also a moms' group that meets every other week, and the child goes to a daycare and moms eat breakfast and there are guest speakers, connecting with other moms, etc. That sounds ok, too, and wonder if a good investment in time to meet new friends or develop relationships.

Anyway, I'm just curious how you all choose how to schedule or unschedule your kids. For me it is nice to have something structured sometimes, but not every day. Thank you!

  • The Mom's thing on Friday sounds nice. I would probably do that and use one of her free days to do a music class or maybe a gym class or dance class if she has a lot of energy. At that age, we did a couple of days of MDO and then a couple of classes/lessons, either on our free mornings or after MDO.

  • We do not do many structured activities.  For my kids, I would keep the free mornings.  I find that they are much happier when we aren't going all the time.  I love doing my mom's group.  It is really nice to have that break on Fridays. You might also need the support since you'll be having a new baby.  I always find it hard to get out when I first have a new baby and would prefer not to have a scheduled activity that I have to be at.  It might be nice to have a nice hot breakfast and some mom time for you!  I know many people don't have problems getting out with a new baby but my spacings probably have a lot to do with that.
