Milk & vitamins.

Has anyone started on cows milk yet? We were given the go ahead to start introducing homogenized cows milk recently. Our doctor never said anything about adding vitamins to the milk however my SIL was told to add a multivitamin to the milk when she decides to start. We had a student take our doctors place for a little while and I'm not impressed what so ever with the lack of information she's been giving me.

Has anyone else been told to add a vitamin?

Re: Milk & vitamins.

  • I've never heard of that? As long as they are still getting BM or formula until a year I'm not sure why you would need to add vitamins? I'm not planning on introducing cows milk until a little over 11 months and then I will be gradually mixing it with my freezer stash of BM to start weaning down to one nursing session a day for when I return to work in mid september.

  • Its actually not good to introduce cows milk this early.  I do it at 11.5 months mixed with formula until a year.  In any event, I don't plan on giving a vitamin unless DD is a picky eater.  DD1 is a very picky eater, so I gave her a vitamin up until she turned 2.

  • I got the go ahead at her 9 month appointment just to introduce a couple oz along with breast milk to gradually get her used to it. I haven't started yet and was thinking around 11-11.5 months as well. I was just lost when many other moms in our play group we're saying that the doctor told them to add a vitamin to it.
  • My baby won't take formula at all and I'm primarily nursing still. Our doc recommended cows milk (whole milk and organic) in a silly cup and give up on trying bottles since he won't take them. He loves cows milk and it got him to get used to the sippy cup. He gets a couple of ounces in his oatmeal in addition to the couple of ounces he takes in the cup.

  • My ped. said that I can start introducing WCM at 10 months.  She asked if I was still nursing and I am so she said if I need some relief I can start introducing it. She made no mentions of multi-v.  I'm personally going to wait until close to a year to make the introduction.
  • This is one of those differences between Canada and the US. Health Canada supports introducing WCM beginning at nine months. Our doctor didn't say anything about adding a multivitamin.

Interesting that no one else heard about the multivitamin either. & yes I could/should have mentioned that we're in canada and it's pretty standard to get the go ahead at 9 months.

12 months is fast approaching and I want to be sure I'm giving her everything she needs.
  • At our last well check, 9 months, my Dr asked if I was giving vitamin drops. He has mentioned it at past appointments but I haven't given her any because I forgot to buy them and I think they taste bad.

We got the ok to do any foods except choking hazards. Including milk products but not straight cups of wcm.

  • I think I'm going to start DS on a multivitamin because of all of his allergies. I took him to the doctor yesterday he had an allergic reaction to rice cereal. Good thing I didn't put it in his bottle before he was 6 mths old.
  • Oh yeah, I do try to remember to give DS the vitamin D drops daily.

Thanks for the reminder! I actually forgot today to give her vit D today.

I was told by SIL that it was a vitamin A and something else I believe that she was told to add to the milk. I'm still confused and I'm just gonna wait until our 1 year check up before changing anything up so I can ask and see what is recommended.
