Is sunscreen a myth?

This just popped up on my FB and I'm not sure what to think. I try to get Emmett in the sun for a few minutes every day without his sunscreen on so that he can get some vitamin D. Now I'm worried that all the time he spends with the sunscreen on is actually hurting him.
What do you think?

Re: Is sunscreen a myth?

  • I saw this too... the fact that the site is called "realfarmacy" with an F has red flags for me but I like the idea that I'm not causing cancer to myself when I sunbathe! BUT I also know that sunscreen is littered with chemicals and crap that isn't good for you!

  • I originally thought the same thing, but I followed some of the links, and they lead to actual studies. The studies are published in scientific journals and state the same findings.

  • Realfarmacy isn't exactly a satire site like the onion.com but its not exactly factual either.

They are pretty well known to take snippits of pseudo factual things and then take an opinion and present it as factual.

Put sunscreen on your baby. Listen to the APA.

  • Follow your pediatrician and your common sense. Poor R is as pale as pale gets having a Dutch mom and an Irish dad. However we don't sun screen him for daily activities like going to the grocery store, library, etc. he gets sun screen if we'll be outside for while with the water table, seeing daddy's games etc. just do what you think your child needs.

I'm not quite sure what that article is trying to say - It just kind of ends. Is it saying don't wear sunscreen at all and bake all day?

Aside from the article, I do think some moderate sun exposure for the vit D is good. Like 20 minutes. I don't sunscreen up for shorter outings with intermittent shade (like going to the park for 20-30 min that is partially shaded). If he's in full midday sun for longer than 20 min, I do sunscreen. I think there is some wisdom in moderation. My son is very fair so we're really careful with too long of sun exposure.
