I need help, stat.

Ok no emergencies really but I need help. We're heading to my employers cottage tomorrow for the day. Her grandson is 2 years old and has a restricted diet. He's gluten and dairy free. I'm limited to a few local grocery stores in my rural area. What would you bring as a side, snack or treat? They have power, water etc but I'd like something pretty simple! Thanks!

  • Fruit, that is all I ever bring for play dates in summer.

  • Yep. Grab a whole watermelon and call it a day. Wait. Is watermelon gluten free?

  • This might be bitchy, but I would assume that I didn't need to take the grandson's dietary restrictions into account, especially if there will be a largeish group present.  Most people I know with kids who have restricted diets tend to pack food for them, and expect that there's not going to be a smorgasboard of choices.  Especially with a 2 year old.  Lord knows they don't eat anything you want them to, anyway.

So if you have a fan favorite dish you often take to potlucks, I'd just roll with it (but of course let the host know about ingredients).

But if you do want to think of him, fruit is a good choice, or veggies and hummus (make sure the hummus is gluten free, not all are).

  • I second fruit. A mixed fruit salad is a great choice!

Popsicles. My kids love the fruit and veggie mixed ones or the banana pops. Some pops do have dairy, like push pops, but most don't.

  • Thanks ladies. It was a small group. 5 adults, 2 kids (DS and the grandson.) I ended up buying a watermelon as a last minute thing. It worked out well. DS and the grandson ate like half the thing themselves!
