I'm still trying to figure this one out myself, as my LO seems to go through nipple "phases". Some days she is good with the level ones, but other days she'll be a lazy sucker and take forever to eat/get tired (and then get hungry again shortly after so I know it's not that she's full). I thought she might need to move up so started trying level twos, which some days she is fine with, other days I guess she is more efficient so chokes and splutters. Still using level one for now because I'd rather her take forever than choke, but kind of wish we could move up sometimes.
We switched from slow flow to medium flow somewhere around 5 months. DD was taking forever to eat. We use tommee tippee and I could tell when the nipples collapse, I just notice, nothing indicates it for me.
Did you guys notice a correlation with gas or hiccups? LO is a week old today and we just moved her up from the preemie size (Dr. Brown's) to Level 1, and she was fussy and gassy like crazy today. The preemie sizes take her forever to finish a bottle, but it's worth it if it makes her less miserable.
thanks everyone .... she doesn't pitch a fit or seem bothered by the bottle flow ... it just takes her forever to finish the bottle ...we had tried a fast flow nipple by accident awhile back and she started choking on it ..just scared of that happening if I switch it up.... she is up to five ounces now and seems to be moving up quickly now so the feedings are getting longer and longer lol
DD never got upset or seemed bothered at all but she took forever to finish a bottle. I tried the medium flow nipples a few times @ 3 months and she would choke and then get really fussy for awhile like she had an upset tummy so I stopped trying. But @ 5 months she started not finishing bottles, like she would get distracted and/or bored with eating and wouldn't finish. Then I tried the medium flow nipple again and she was fine with it and started finishing her bottles again.

We noticed this when we moved up to soon. LO would gulp and trap more air while eating. What helped us : Make the formula in a pitcher and refrigerate prior to serving and move back to preemie size nipples.

DS1 never move past level 2 he was always a fast eater so he needed a slower flow nipple. dS2 we are thinking about moving him to level 3 and he is just 4 months he takes forever to eat and seems to get bored while eating then wants to eat 45 min later.
