"Why do you dress your daughter like a boy?"

So LO and I went out for a walk in the downtown area of a town nearby this morning. I was sitting on a bench enjoying an iced coffee, and LO was in her stroller pointing to every person who walked by. An older woman (maybe 65 or so) walked by and said "your son is adorable." So I replied "thank you, she's a girl." The woman got a confused look on her face and said "why do you dress your daughter like a boy?" I attached a picture of the outfit she was wearing , mind you she was in the stroller so maybe the woman didn't realize it was a skirt. Regardless, even if I did have her in boys clothes, why do you think it's your place to comment? Rude. image

  • Wow, so rude! FTR I would totally put my daughter in that outfit, it's super cute.

  • It's because she was in dark blue. Same happened to us and Alexis had on dark blue with polka dots and a red bow. I don't get it. If it's not obvious then just say your baby is adorable without stating the sec you think it is

  • Cute outfit, whenever I have dressed my girls in blue I joked they looked like boys b/c they both have/had really short hair at this age.  But that lady was wayyy out of line for her comment!

  • Wow!  Most of our stuff is neutral, khaki Car Seat and Stroller and our High Chair we take out to places is aqua blue. I'm not girly and for everything to be pink was just too much for me personally.  Old peoples filter is about the same as a 4 year old.

  • I wear blue all the time! I don't understand why people are weird about baby girls in blue.

  • I don't mind her being mistaken for a boy, I agree that all babies are kind of androgynous anyway (though I think she looks feminine). @AbbyMMM‌ you are probably right, maybe she was embarrassed that she called her the wrong gender and just blurted something out.

  • Thats annoying, people say the weirdest things.

My lil guy was wearing navy shorts and a shirt covered in baseball bats and balls and the woman working at babies r us kept asking me questions about "her" and calling him "she." Couldn't have put him in a more boyish outfit!

  • I've had this happen several times. DH just had this happen to him. He had her in the stroller at Home Depot while I was in the restroom. She was wearing purple with ruffles and this older lady came up and referred to her as a boy. DH was incredulous that anyone would refer to her as a boy especially when she's wearing purple and ruffles.

  • People are weird. I think the outfit is adorable.
  • I dress DS in navy and red a lot. He is mistaken for a girl quite a bit. If I bother saying oh he's a boy. I usually get he's too pretty to be a boy. I think people just want to talk to babies and they don't think about what comes out of their mouths. I like to think that he's so cute that it makes people dumbfounded leading to stupid comments. ;)
  • My LO had a red white and blue outfit one day and the guy at the GAP was trying to be so nice and kept saying oh he's gorgeous and going to be a lady killer.  The outfit was a skirt but she was in the stroller so he probably couldn't tell.  It annoys me way more than it should so I almost always have a bow in her hair when we're out but it was sunny so she had a hat on that day that she had pulled off.  One day she'll have hair....haha
  • The outfit is cute and clearly a girl outfit. But I agree, regardless if it was specifically "boy" or "girl" its cute and you wanted her to wear it. Simple. I've had DS in all blue and people have still asked if he was a boy or girl.

People can be rude, dumb, or sadly both at the same time.
  • I had DS in an orange and blue dinosaur shirt and jeans, an older lady said "Your daughter looks like a boy in those clothes!" Um... he is a boy lol.
