Sleep issues...

So sorry to bring this up AGAIN , but after talking with my mom this weekend I'm beginning to wonder... At what point does one determine that it's a sleep disorder that is making your child a terrible sleeper?

Seriously, i've had some serious breakdowns this week because J's wake-ups are making me feel like a terrible mother! He is now back to 45 min+ crying sessions MOTN AND he's waking at 4:30 for the day pretty consistantly. This would make 2 months of off and on sleep training and I am exhausted! I know that they say you might have to repeat sleep training but I thought it would last longer than a week!

ETA: teething tablets and Tylenol don't help so I don't think he's teething.

Re: Sleep issues...

  • I feel your pain. My guy has always been a terrible sleeper. I've tried sleep training and it didn't help at all.  My pediatrician kept telling me he's just a bad sleeper but I felt like it was something more. Turns out he's had an ongoing ear infection with  a ton of fluid build up in his ears which resulted in some hearing loss. The ENT said it's the reason he hasn't been sleeping. He's had tubes put in very recently and I'm starting to see a change.

I'm not saying it's that but if you think it's something other than just a bad sleeper,I say check it out. I wish I listened to my gut instead  and checked his ears much sooner.

  • @littledaisies‌ and @nech0606‌ were your kiddos ever really good sleepers though? J has never been. Like those people who say they started STTN at 3,6,10 mo and then declined? That's not my kiddos. He's always been an inconsistent sleeper. I have an odoscope though, i'll check his ears
  • @nech0606 no he's not nursing. I seriously feel like we were making progress before I weaned but that was way back in Dec. and really, progress with my kid could mean reverting the very next week...

I do think the sleep journal is a great idea and will be starting one tonight!
  • No recommendations. But feel your pain....I too have an awesomely awful sleeper. She will sometimes STTN then next night be up 3x. Cant figure itout. Popped 1 tooth but dont feel any others coming so can't blame teething For the bad nights. Mainly blame dh and i for not sleep training earlier.

  • @huzzahuzza  He's never been a good sleeper. Obviously I don't count when he was a newborn nursing every couple hours but from 4 months on, he has been a bad sleeper. He started daycare at the time and got sick immediately.  I tried everything, sleep training even though I didn't want to, co-sleeping, crib sleeping, lavender, colic drops, etc. You name it, we tried it. We have had a routine for bed from the beginning but nothing helped. I kept thinking it's got to be something more than just being a bad sleeper. He wakes up screaming,  not crying, but seriously screaming at night. Some nights you can't put him down at all. He started banging his head on his crib and our headboard at night. My doctor said this is normal for some kids but it didn't feel normal to me.  Finally I went to an ENT even though my doctor recommended I wait, and found out he has problems with his ears which is causing all these problems.

I agree with OP, keep a journal and check out a sleep clinic for children. Our local hospital hasan outpatient sleep disorder office for children. If you think something is off, I say check it out. There's no harm in it.
