March 2015 Moms

When will you tell work?

I'm just starting a new job so I am SO nervous to tell my NEW boss about my pregnancy.  "Hi, thanks for hiring me.  BTW, I'll need a few weeks off in March."  Ugh.  With DD, I had been working there for 6 years, so I felt much more confident telling my boss...When are you all planning to tell your work?  12 weeks?

Re: When will you tell work?

  • I don't plan on telling my boss because FMLA will tell her.  I have to use FMLA time for appointments (or vacation time, but there is no vacation time available for most of the rest of this year, so FMLA it is) and when we sign up for FMLA they email our bosses that we opened a case AND the reason for the case.
  • Loading the player...
  • I am also starting a new job as a teacher so I don't even start until mid august. I'm going to wait until at least mid September so I have at whole month of trying to impress everyone before I tell them I need time off.
  • I'm looking at a new job possibility that will come up in about two weeks. So in about a month, I could have a new job. I'm already conflicted about when to tell if that happens (during hiring process or when I start?). It's an interesting situation as the boss is an old acquaintance through my current job, so there is a personal relationship. But she's also a hardcore business woman (who is very family friendly). It's funny, the only people who know I've applied over there are the boss and a person I recommended for a job with her years ago. Anyway, I so very much want to work for this company and it's a bit funny that is all working out right when we get pregnant.

If that doesn't pan out, I will wait until at least 12 weeks to tell at my current job. That would be the third week of August or so.
  • I'll tell after the first trimester.  I work in a school so I don't go back till August anyway. Usually when someome gets pregnant or engaged our principal sends an email out to the entire school to announce it. I'll ask my principal to not do that until I give him the OK as I don't want anything ending up on FB until I put it there.
  • Previously, I told my principal when I started having to take crazy time off for appointments and stuff.  This was also because there were problems and I had surgeries and stuff.  This time around, it will when I return to school for training in August.

I, however, went on a pretty awesome interview for a new position in a different district at the end of June and haven't heard anything from them yet about a second interview.  If somehow this new position works out telling them would a stickier situation.

With DS, I waited until I was 15 weeks and it was getting really hard to hide it.  I can already tell that I'll be showing sooner with this one, so I'll probably just wait it out and see how long I can go without it being obvious.  I think she's expecting it though, as she's made comments about how DS needs a sibling :-)

  • My boss resigned in May and the company still hasn't hired a new director to fill the position so looks like I will be telling them as soon as they get hired. I'm not worried about it though because I plan on returning in May.

  • My boss will probably know next week.  We're all friends.

With my son I had just been hired for a new job a couple of days before I found out.  My training happened when I was 11 weeks pregnant and I told my boss the first day of training.  His response was "kids are amazing, I have three myself!"  He was totally cool with it.  I actually two months off and he was OK with that, too.  You might be surprised that the old attitude of giving pregnant women negative backlash is no longer the case.  Mostly because it's illegal in most states, but also because women are more likely to return back to work after maternity leave now, so it's not like they hired you only to lose you in less than a year.

  • I'll probably be telling my boss around October, during my mid second tri, I work from home so I can wait for a long time, but I don't want to wait until the last minute!

  • Sometime after the first trimester. I want to give them enough time to work out how to cover for me, since I plan on taking the whole 12 weeks I am allowed (unpaid, ouch). But two of my coworkers are my age and recently had kids themselves, so there's a good chance they'll figure it out if I get really tired/nauseous/etc.! Hopefully they can keep a secret from our male boss, though.

  • I plan to keep it quiet until 2nd trimester, which will be early Sept, after all our testing comes back. I told my boss last time at 8 weeks because I got promoted and wanted to get the ball rolling on one of the products we were developing. Well my boss let it slip to two ladies here and they have a bit of a big mouth. I wouldn't have minded too much, but then we had the diagnose of T13 and then the loss, so I had more people to tell than I would have liked.

  • I'm still working on getting a new position. I had started at a new job (I'm a teacher) when pregnant with E and now, due to circumstances beyond my control, I'll be in the same situation. I would try not to be nervous about it. Your family planning is your family planning. They should be happy for you. If you were right for the job, they won't regret hiring you, and they won't be upset you'll have to go on leave for a bit. Anyhow, if/when I find a new job, I'll be start in late August. I won't tell until after the NT scan as it is, but will likely wait until late Sep or early Oct.
  • I think I told my boss early last time because my DR and I had different dates. This time I will wait until after my first trimester. I'm not worried about reaction as my company is very family friendly and I've already proven I'm coming back since I did it the first time. However, our company is busy with finishing litigation that we filed 2.5 years ago so no one need to deter focus from that to acknowledge me being KU.

  • I am semi-off for the summer and go into the office maybe once a week so I don't feel a lot of pressure to tell yet.
I want to meet with HR first and will do that after heartbeat/US and then move from there.  I'd like to tell my department at our first meeting where we catch up with what everyone did over the summer.  I'm pretty sure people are going to be surprised.

  • I wanted to wait until 3 months to tell everyone here, but next week is my birthday and we (traditionally) go out to celebrate birthdays and close the office for the afternoon; which means drinks. I've ALWAYS had a specific drink with a coworker at every event, so I'll kind of have to spill.
If it was a new job, or really any other job I've had in the past, I'd wait until I was obviously showing.
  • I will probably wait until after 12 weeks, assuming I can hide it that long.

I have told two of my coworkers, but I trust them not to say anything to any one else.

  • @mandi195 My birthday is in two weeks as well, and it will be a little suspicious if I'm not drinking. We always do a big office get-together for birthdays, with all the bosses in attendance. I may try to deter, since I'm a little anxious to spill the beans so soon. My plan was to wait until midway through the 2nd tri.
  • I will tell my principal when school resumes in September.  This timing of the pregnancy is pretty similar to my last pregnancy and that's when I told last time!  I won't tell my students or their parents for as long as I can get away with it!

  • I will see how long I can go without telling my boss.. in nursing (while pregnant) there are certain patients and situations we can't care for/put ourselves in due to safety reasons. Since I'm not in "direct patient care", though, I may be able to go to the beginning of the second tri. I am sitting in orientation as I type, so I also have the fear of telling being that I'm in this new position.
  • As late as I can depending on if I show or get very sick.

  • I work in a school as many other moms here, and I plan on telling the principal at the beginning of the school year (end of August)
I work as a 1:1 with a very tough kid so I am nervouse as to how long I will be able to work with him since he is physically and emotional draining when I am not pregnant.

  • I told my boss this morning! I was super nervous but she took it so well. (She has an 18 month old.) I work with some chemicals and I had to tell her to change the schedule around. Also it's nice that she can help me out or have someone help if I'm feeling too ill to do somethings. I'm hoping I can hold out until the 2nd trimester to tell the ladies at my work but I don't know how long I can hold out as I'm getting pretty sick. Also I'm always up and running around the salon and someone will notice I will be resting and taking a few more breaks now.

  • I'm pretty friendly with my boss (there are a handful of us that are close) and I told him early on last time and he was very accommodating when I had a m/c. I think he's out of town for the next few weeks so I'll probably tell him around the time I have my first u/s. Hopefully for happy reasons and not "I'm going to be out of the office for the next few days" this time.

    My Ovulation Chart

  • I just started my new position June 6 (while ending my last cycle). Surprise BFP July 4. I had made an apt to renew BCB and my yearly for the 21st of this month.. Had to call and change my reason for the apt.
My boss is super awesome, but because she really jumped through hoops to get me the job, I feel hesitant to share the news with her just yet.. My grandmother and one coworker (the only one who knows until 2nd trimester) have advised me to wait, but I kind of feel like lying to her/keeping it a secret when she is my boss will be more of a disappointment to her.. So I think I will wait a few weeks after my appointment and tell her I found out then (she already knows I have an apt for a yearly..).
Although I won't have been here long enough to get my short-term disability benefits, there is an upside. I work signing people up for the Marketplace (Insurance, Affordable Care Act). By time March rolls around, all that will be closed and is known as our downtime. At least I won't be leaving them when things are rough around here!

  • If all goes well, I will probably tell at least the partner I have a big trial with this fall after my next appointment at about 10 1/2 weeks.  Unless I'm too sick or miserable for him to not notice before then.
  • I've told one coworker, and after I make my first prenatal appointment tomorrow, I'll tell my clinic manager. I plan to keep everyone else in the dark until hopefully the end of the first trimester, but I don't know if that'll end up working out. I can certainly try.

  • I told mine after my first US. That way I could actually believe it first. I told my boss that I didn't want anyone else to know just yet and he was very understanding
  • I'm hoping to wait to 12 weeks. At the very least I want to wait until after the first ultrasound. After that, it depends on how much the nausea, etc affect me. If I'm struggling to keep it in line, I'll probably tell. If not, I'll wait.
  • I work for my parents so I pretty much let them know a couple days ago! Wanted to wait for the ultrasound, but I decided that should there be a problem and I needed to leave work in an emergency, it would be a lot easier for them to just know. :) It's been good, too, since they're super excited and petting me off work (Even though I'm out of vacation time/pto) to go tour the hospital and for my future set appointments! :)

This post has helped me...I started my job in mid-April, so I am nervous that they'll be upset that I am announcing this being that I'm so new. Everyone is so nice and I have no reason to think that, but I don't know...I'm terrified! I don't have any "buddies" at my work. It's a school, I'm new and I'm not a teacher. The departments are very small, so it's basically me and my two bosses. Should I tell HR first (I really like the HR lady) and ask for advice on how to break the news to my bosses?

My plan was to wait until after the first trimester to tell anyone.
  • I'm debating. I don't really see a downside of telling early unless I misscarry and have to say what happened. I'll probably tell my boss and one other soon and then hold out as long as possible for everyone else.

  • I'm actually thinking of telling my boss this week, ahead of even telling family. Work has been super stressed out for me lately, and I actually broke down in tears twice in one day this week. The stress is not good for me or the little one, it's just not worth it.

    image

  • @daizedoo‌ that does sound very stressful! what do you do/where do you work?
  • Three of my coworkers will be leaving at the end of the week and they have been waiting for me to get pregnant, so even though it's super early, I told them so that they could hear about it before they left. But I'm probably going to wait to tell my Office Manager until around 12 weeks. Work has been busy and stressful recently, so I may need to tell her sooner if I start getting sick or having tons of symptoms.
