Adoption

Birth is one month from today

So my sister in law is giving birth in one month via c-section. Have any of you went through a private adoption with a c section? How were you all treated by hospital staff? When touring the hospital and talking to the dr they all say we will have parental rights.

The only fear I have is not being sensitive to my sister in law who is giving me the greatest gift of all. I want to show her how grateful I am to her but I want to experience my daughter's arrival too. Sis has been great with all of the dr appointments and is excited to see the love we have for them.

I worry about her emotions when we take the baby home even though she will be next door.

Anyone else ever been through an adoption with a family member?

Re: Birth is one month from today

  • There have been a few posters here who adopted from family members.  From what I've witnessed, it can work out beautifully, although getting there can be bumpy.  Being close can be a blessing (because she can see how her daughter is growing practically every day), but can also make things really difficult as she mourns for her loss and you have to establish your role as strong parents.  It's easy for hurt feelings to develop if either you or your sister-in-law have a different idea of what the relationship will be like (for instance if she things she will be somehow co-parenting or have influence you aren't anticipating).  In all the cases I've seen, however, the families make it through, find their perfect balance, and are stronger on all fronts in the end.

I wish you all the best of luck.
