Progestrone cream...WWYD?

I just had my 2nd IUI this morning, my RE said everything looked great. I then asked her about giving me progestrone suppositories and she said she only prescribes them after a BFP and the progestrone levels are low. I see an RE thru my HMO and I know I'm not getting the same attention I would get at a fertility clinic where I would pay OOP. I was thinking of trying progestrone cream but I was wondering if there was any detriment to trying this OTC cream. Last month my progestrone level was 13 and my RE said this was "adequate" for a medicated cycle. But I don't want adequate! We went back and forth about the progestrone but she seemed pretty adimant about me not needing it. Any thoughts? I hate to 2nd guess my RE but I know how HMOs treat their patients. I am thinking of using a natural brand of progestrone cream.

Re: Progestrone cream...WWYD?

  • My RE does not put me on progesterone as a matter of course, he only prescribes it if needed. Medicated cycles tend to have stronger LPs, so even though the Clomid or Femara is taken early in the cycle, it can still help out during the LP.

Since I haven't experienced early losses, I wasn't worried about it. If you do want to use an OTC progesterone, I would definitely inform the RE.

  • I haven't started medicated cycles yet but I think I remember my RE saying that they usually prescribe it to give each cycle the best possible chance. I'm not sure yet how it will work for me, I just wanted to say I'm sorry you are stuck in his position with your RE. Maybe call the office back and see if they would call in a prescription if it would make you feel better, it doesn't hurt to ask!

My cycle's are short 24-26 days so I asked my RE for the suppositories this month. Last month my 7DPO progesterone level was 13, which is fine, but not strong. This month I started taking the progesterone suppositories the night of my last IUI and I'm still on them until tomorrow's BETA results and my level this cycle was 43. I have read over and over again that the progesterone suppositories do not get into your blood so your blood levels will not change just from the suppositories so I think I just ovulated multiple eggs. I usually start to spot around CD10/11 and I just started spotting today at CD13 (uggg almost about to call this cycle a bust), so it did do its job by extending my LP with the hopes of an egg sticking.

In regards to the cream, I have read that progesterone does not penetrate well through the skin, so it is unlikely to help with your uterine lining, but hey, what the heck try it out. I don't think it will hurt anything. Try asking the RE again for the suppositories, it can't hurt.

    Me: 33, DH: 32

    TTC: 2 years
    Fertility blood tests all normal
    Tilted uterus
    3 day ultrasound 17 follicles
    HSG: 11/13/13- tubes open
DH SA: SUPER sperm (145 million, 84% motility, 22% morphology)
All infection disease and immunity blood tests NORMAL

FIRST IUI May 2014: 100 mg Clomid days 5-9, third ultrasound CD 13 revealed four follicles 27, 24 and 20 and 13mm. Trigger shot May 28 with IUI May 29 and 30 (fingers crossed) - BFN started spotting 11DPO :(

IUI #2 B2B 6/23 and 6/24, three mature eggs and 130 million sperm! FX this is the month!  BFN 7/8

3rd cycle benched due to cysts - TI with OPK tests -  BFN

3rd mediated cycle: Clomid+Trigger+TI  (three follies left side, one on right as usual....what the hell right ovary get it together and produce some damn follicles!) 7DPO progesterone level 43 with NO suppositories YAY for a natural strong ovulation. Beta canceled started spotting 13DPO - Third time is not a CHARM! 14 day cycle WTF! Everything looks normal - RE wants to start injectables next cycle so this cycle I'm benched

Officially benched until March....but still plan on trying the baking soda douche due to my excessive and thick CM

JANUARY SIGGY CHALLENGE...This is so me!

  • My re said she prescribes it after a medicated cycle also, just in case. I know progesterone can't hurt. I also know some REs are not as trustworthy as others. If you think trying some progesterone cream will help then I say try it. Don't over do it but maybe just using so e for a small boost will put u at ease
  • I had my progesterone checked yesterday at 7 DPO and it was 19, they told me they like it over 20. They put me on a low dose of progesterone. I'm wondering why your doctor feels 13 isn't too low. I can't imagine taking an OTC cream could do any harm.
