NBR: Deodorant

What kind of deodorant do you use and does it work?

For quite some time now, I've noticed that no matter what kind of deodorant I use, whenever I put it on, I feel like I stink.  It always smells like a mix of the deodorant fragrance and sweat, like almost instantly.  And no matter how much more I put on, it doesn't help.  However, I also have noticed that if I don't put any on at all, I don't smell like anything unless I've really been sweaty/working hard.  I just bought some clinical strength yesterday and I feel like it's so much worse today.  It's embarrassing!  What do you guys use and/or has anyone had this issue before?

I use clinical strength deodorant, either Secret or Dove, whichever is on sale.

I forgot to wear deodorant once at work a few years ago and I could immediately tell. :) Look for the active ingredients and the amount in it. If the traditional deodorants don't work, you can always try the more natural crystal roll on deodorants. There are a few out there because people are paranoid about the aluminum in traditional deodorants.

  • I saw on another post that someone had suggested dabbing vinegar to even out the ph? I may be wrong though.

I switched to a men's deodorant when I got pregnant. It seems to help, but it is more fragrant so I'm not sure if that will be worse for you.

    FX for a solution!

  • I usually use Dove clinical strength, but I have also used Degree clinical strength and that works well too.  I wasn't a fan of Secret, it didn't work that well for me.  Of course, when it's humid and 90 degrees outside, nothing works.  Sometimes I'm tempted to put deodorant under my boobs too!

  • I switch brands every time I run out of deodorant. This time, I just bought Dove Advanced Care, the pomegranate scent. I like it, and it works well:

Have you considered trying one of the Arm&Hammer essentials? I think they're not an antiperspirant, just a lightly scented deodorant. Might be worth a look?

  • I used men's deodorant for my wedding day/night and that didn't help either.

I wonder if it's a reaction in one of the ingredients or something?  I've also tried using non-scented stuff and that didn't work, either.  Yesterday I forgot to put some on and I went outside and worked in the yard for a while and I didn't smell at all..

  • @Heartwood0519 I guess it could be a reaction to the ingredients.  Do you have a problem with wetness or is it just the weird smell you seem to get when you do use deodorant?  I feel like I couldn't go without some kind of antiperspirant or I'd have wet and uncomfortable pits!  If you don't sweat a lot normally, I would just go without it.  One less thing to remember to put on in the morning, haha.

You could try patting a bit of baking soda in your pits one morning and see if that's not enough to absorb any sweat/smell, and stick deodorant in your purse in case that doesn't work. If it's an ingredient in deodorant, moving away from traditional deodorant ingredients might help.

  • I just use regular Secret, in vanilla. I find it works well enough for me. Only thing is that while I've been pregnant, Im sweaty and gross all over so unless I put it everywhere I'll still be sweaty and gross.

Also its funny, Ive been using the same thing, same scent for years and sometimes SO will be like "Are you wearing new deodorant? (New cream? Perfume? Etc)" "Nope. Same stuff"

I don't have a problem with wetness at all.  It's just the weird smell.

I think I might try that tomorrow!  :)

This. I use a little bit of baking soda only and that's been working great.

  • I use Secret - Invisible Solid - Shower Fresh (or unscented). Sometimes I use Secret - Solid - Powder Fresh, but that is my reserve keep at my desk at work deodorant. I can't use the gels or the sort of liquidy powder ones as they just make it worse. I used to have the same issues you are describing, but I started using these and they work for me.

  • I normally use Secret or Degree, but when I get pregnant that shit doesn't work. I switched to Teen Spirit and it seems to control the stank.

  • I use Degree and that works the best for me. It sounds like you might be having a reaction to something in the anti-perspirant though? Have you tried any of the natural deodorants like Tom's or the crystal rock one (I forget the name). They're not as harsh and don't do anything for wetness but can help with smelly pits if that's your worry.
  • I use Secret, usually the powder fresh. But in the last few months I found the solid didn't work as well, so I switched to the clear gel kind (same scent) and for some reason that helped. I never smell it once it's on, but if I try anything with a different scent it bugs me all day.

  • I had the same problem!

I've used many kinds, the only one that works for me is Degree Clinical. I've tried Secret Clinical, but it doesn't work.

  • I use a handmade my one from Bunny Butt Apothecary on Etsy. It's made with vegetable protein. Not an antipirspirant, but it sounds like you don't need that. It's the only thing I've tried that doesn't make me sweat like crazy or start to stink after only a few hours. It's a little pricey, but so worth it.

Sorry I'm on mobile so I can't link it easily.
  • Be careful with baking soda-it was an ingredient in a natural deodorant I tried and it gave my pits a bad rash :( Obviously it doesn't bother some people (like some pp) but just so you know!

I currently use one of the crystal roll-ons and I pat a little Burt's Bees baby powder on. I'm one of those people who sweats A LOT and with this combination I occasionally notice a smell other than the powder, but usually just the mild powder smell (which could bother some people).

    Good luck!

  • I use old spice original, but not the clear one, it's white.

It's for men, but it's the only thing that works for me.

I smell perpetually of clean man.

  • Tom's Natural unscented. Doesn't smell like anything and seems to work well.

  • I have a natural one from Soapwalla on Etsy.  It's made from clay and minerals or something and lavender scented.  It comes in a little tub and rubs in like a paste, and I love it.  But I can't use it the day I shave because it burns a little, so on those days I currently use Secret invisible solid.

  • I had this problem when I was pregnant with my first DD. Even after giving birth I just smelled all the time but didn't have a wetness problem. I tried so many different kinds of deodorants for years and nothing helped. I finally experimented and made my own. It worked so well for me I gave some to my friends to try and they loved it as well. They talked me into listing it on my Etsy shop and it has been my biggest seller. If you want to take a peek at it, I would be happy to message you the link.

  • I use regular old Secret and it works fine.  I have tried the clinical strength in the past, but was concerned about the higher aluminum levels in the clinical strength one, so I went back to regular strength.  It lasts all day, but on a hot summer day, I do reapply if I've been outside all day.  I tried a Secret Naturals one when first pregnant, but that did NOTHING.

  • I use the secret clinical strength and I feel like it is still not doing the trick. I feel like I sweat ALL the time! This works better for me than than typical deoderant; however I Still feel like a sweaty mess.
