Cloth Diapering

Question About Stripping

Refresher on backstory -- we had stink issues and a rash that wouldn't go away for a month.  Finally got the rash cleared up (after using sposies) and I got some Nellie's detergent (Tide caused the rash, and Charlie's wasn't getting the dipes clean enough so it perpetuated the rash).  I did an RLR strip on all my diapers to get the build-up out, and it seems to have worked for all but our overnight fitteds (GMD workhorses).  If I put him in one of these overnight, in the morning it has a knock-you-on-your-ass ammonia stink that makes his whole nursery reek for as long as it sits in the diaper pail.

Question:  Should I try another RLR strip on just these overnight fitteds?  Or is there something else you would suggest?  Hot water strips haven't seemed to do much for us in the past.

Thank you!

  • Our ON diapers reak like that too. I soak them in the morning in hot water for a few hours before throwing them in the pail. Then I don't smell them at all. Have you tried soaking in the am? Do they stink out of the wash?

This. I also bleached them to get a clean slate, which if RLR or hot water strips didn't help is a good move to try.

    It all revolves around you.

  • I tried bleach a while back, but it didn't help. That was before the RLR though.... Should I try again?

I've never tried soaking.....do you just throw them in a bucket of water? Is there any detergent or bac-out in there? Do you wring it out before putting it back in the pail?

  • As far as ONs: I soak ours in water with a few squirts of bac out.

For stink: If I have hard water build-up I use RLR or washing soda.
If I have detergent build-up I use hot water and reduce my detergent.
If I have ammonia I use Funk Rock and tweak my wash routine.
If I have barnyard I use bleach and tweak my wash routine.

I don't quite know how to pinpoint your problem b/c I don't know your washer/water type/wash routine.  If you have RLR'd already chances are another time probably won't do much.
  • @abby8279‌ -- awesome info, thank you! I have a HEFL machine and hard water, which is probably what lead to our issues. Since I did RLR and extra hot washes, maybe I need something like Funk Rock. His overnight dipes are soaked in the morning, so ammonia buildup would not surprise me.

I had an ammonia problem with ON diapers when we were using Freetimes. I did a hot water strip, and changed my detergent to Nellies, and then started soaking them in hot water in the mornings. I have no problems now. I did also buy a couple of sbish fitteds for ON because I can soak them without ruining PUL but I do still use the Freetimes some nights and I've had no more problems with any of them so far. She does still have some ammonia smell in the morning but she's in the diaper for a long time so that's normal.

And-common sense, but I got irrationally worried while reading-if you need to soak in a bucket, lock the bathroom door.

I don't soak my ON fitteds. Just rinse and wring them gently in the bathroom sink, then toss in the pail. It makes a huge difference
