Heart defect

Our doctor heard a heart murmur on my 11 month old son so we had an echo that shows that he has an aortic bicuspid and aortic valve stenosis. My doctor said it is not serious. Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: Heart defect

  • Did you see a pediatric cardiologist or your regular pedi for the results? The stenosis formed most likely because he has a biscuspid valve.

There should be some sort of regular follow up plan in place- like yearly echocardiograms to assess the heart and valve functions. Those aren't major defects and are not likely to cause issues, but it's still recommended to do routine visits with cardiologist to make sure the stenosis isn't progressing.

So you should have 3 valves in the aorta. Having 2 isn't a real huge issue persay. The 2 valves can be indicative of another connective tissue disease, or it could be a fluke.

Stenosis is the loss of flexibility of the valve/not opening enough. So not being able to accommodate the forceful blood flow from the heart. That is what is causing the sound of the murmur.

Overall it won't affect the quality of life or condition of the heart. Usually, it's just a condition that is monitored to make sure the valve is still working like it's supposed to.
