Cloth Diapering

Recommend your AIO

I am hoping to CD with my DS coming in September. DH is not really on board, so I am looking into AIOs to help with the ease of use. I have registered for some BumGenius Freetime diapers and some Thirsties Duo AIOs. I like the price of the Thirsties for sure. Also, if you do AIOs, how many do you own? We have a reasonable disposable stash and I imagine that we will be given more, so it will not be full time CDing. Thoughts?

Re: Recommend your AIO

  • No input on AIOs, I'm not a fan, but for full time CDing we recommend 36 nb size changes, and 24 OS changes, washing EOD. How many you need for part time use just depends on how often and when you use them, but those numbers might help give you an idea.

  • @TJ1979‌ has used the BG freetimes almost exclusively. (I think)

And I've used the old style BG Elementals exclusively. I like them a lot better than the new style Elementals.
Elementals take forever to line dry... So I needed more than 24 for that. But since I'm lazy we use the dryer primarily. And 24 is sufficient for EOD washing. Early on depending on how quick you kiddo fits OS you may want more than 24.

  • My DD was 9 lbs 7 oz and we do not expect DS to be any smaller. I am hoping to invest in OS or with the Thirsties, more Size 2 than 1. I was planning on drying them in the dryer as well. I know that can lessen their life, but I think we will be done with this baby.

  • I agree that the size 2 won't fit a newborn. But DS was a little baby 7lb2oz at birth and was into OS at 5 weeks! He has always had chunky thighs.

  • Do you think that the Thirsties Size 1 will fit sooner than a OS? @theultimatesak
  • The Thirsties Size 1 should fit early on.

I love my Blueberry Newborn Simplex AIO. It fits really well and holds a lot of that newborn poo in. And it dries up really well too. It fit my 9lb-er from the start and is still fitting at 7 weeks.

They are definitely more expensive, but might not hurt to have a couple around for easy changes.

  • I probably have 12-14 AIOs and most of them are Simplex. They are my favorite but I think this is the right number of Simplex for us. The reason being that DS needs the highest rise setting but his legs are really skinny so he has gaps. Maybe they will fit again soon, but in the meantime I have other diapers that still work.

The rest of my OS stash is pockets/AI2s. Right now I am only buying diapers if they are daycare-friendly (Aplix).

I didn't start CDing until about 8 weeks so I don't have any advice about NB stuff.

Most of my stash is BG 4.0s and AC AI2s. I have 2 BG Freetimes and they are okay. I don't get quite as good of a fit as with the 4.0s and they are a bit bulkier. The absorption is good and they are easy to use and I don't find that mine take too long to line dry. So all in all I like them, but they aren't my favourite in my stash.

Check out Nicki's bamboo AIOs - they're cheap and get awesome reviews. Im thinking of getting some myself. I have half a stash of AIOs and half pockets, but I prefer AIOs. I have Elementals now that I really like, but they're expensive and the old style is super hard to find.

Size 1 Thirsties AIO's fit my 8 lb 10 oz baby from day 1 -- However, she outgrew absorbency around 3 weeks. I loved the fit and how cute the prints were, but we didn't get a lot of use out of them, unfortunately. Stuffing them with extra inserts just made them really bulky, which I'm not a fan of.

We didn't transition to OS until 5-6 weeks and even then a lot of our OS didn't fit right or was just way too bulky. I would say she was about 8 weeks before we made a full transition to all OS from newborn dipes.

We use mostly AIO's (with lots of AI2's mixed in there and only a few pockets & fitteds) - My favorites are BG Freetime's & Elementals (we use the new style, haven't tried the old style that a lot of people love) and Blueberry Simplex (we like the OS- haven't tried sized and don't plan to in order to save $$). We have a couple Moraki's too, but they aren't my favorite. A lot of people love Moraki though, so might be worth a try.

Freetimes are our current overnight diaper - We can use Simplex, too. Simplex is nice because it also has a pocket that you can easily stuff if you ever need more absorption. We've never had to do that, but it's nice to have the option.

ETA: I wanted to mention possibly looking at SoftBums - They aren't an AIO, but they have an AI2 called an "Echo" that is super easy (the inserts just snap in, takes 2 seconds, and there's no stuffing) - This is a true OS diaper. It fit well from day one and goes up to, I believe, 35 pounds.I love them.

We use AIOs for daycare and have about 14.  We love Freetimes, Simplex, and Itti Bitti Tutto.  Itti Bitti Tutto are trimmer, but they are sized.
