sippy cup verses bottle

DS is breastfed but he does occasionally get bottles of breast milk and when I go back to work at the end of August he will have even more bottles. Does anyone know if at 10/11 months they should have their milk/formula in bottles or in a sippy cup.  Right now we only use the sippy cup for water.

Re: sippy cup verses bottle

  • We use bottles for milk and sippy cups for water. I don't see that changing anytime soon. I don't see the issue with them still using bottles, as they are still pretty young. So I guess it's really just a personal preference for what works for the baby. As long as they are getting their milk it shouldn't matter what it's coming out of, at least not at this stage IMO.

  • Our doctor told us by 1 year there should be no more bottles. I had asked because I'm gonna be starting to wean soon and I wasn't sure if I should start with a bottle or go straight to a cup but she recommended straw cups and trying to train her on regular cups.

They're definitely still young though so you can probably get away with the bottles for a while longer but I'm assuming it will probably be easier to get off the bottle the less they have it.
  • My OB said the same as @burrberrymum. The goal is no bottles by 1 and down ot 16oz max of formula/day. We haven't used a sippy cup yet but I just went out and bought a training time straw sippy cup to give her some water.

  • Our pedi also hoped we would have DS off bottles by age 1 or thereabouts. He has used sippies of different kinds for water only since he was about 7 months but he wants to play with it more than drink it. We are starting to give him one formula bottle per day in the sippy and once he gets the hang of it, transition another. We'll keep going like that until he has all sippies. We'll probably save the bedtime bottle for last. At this point I'm wondering what will happen first - the transition off bottles or the transition to whole cows milk.

  • Same as pp- pedi recommended off bottles by 1. She also cut her down to 25 oz per day now. My mom will give LO her formula in a cup sometimes, but I've only done water so far. LO loves cups though, or anything with a straw, so I'm hoping the transition won't be so bad.

  • I'll probably be using the bottle until one year old.  If you already have the bottles, and your LO likes them, then you might as well use them.  If you have to purchase bottles, maybe only buy 2-3 for when you are at work and then use cups the rest of the time.

DD2 is really good with drinking from sippy cups so I might put formula in it a few weeks before her bday,.  DD1 would ONLY drink water out of a sippy until about 15 months so I used to give her 1-2 bottles of milk a day.  Her pedi was fine with that.  Then she transitioned and it's been all good since then.

Does anyone know why they recommend no bottles after 1? Is it a tooth thing?

Yes it's about orthodontic development from what I understand. With DS we went down to only 2 bottles per day at 12 months (afternoon nap and evening) then took those away cold turkey just before 18 months. My pedi was OK with that but any longer and she would have been pressing us on it.

I was told no bottles after 15 months with DS and he used a bottle (granted not every day and not every time) until he was 18 months, on occasion.  His teeth are fine.  Yes you should try to phase them out I agree but you don't have to be a nazi about it and typically they will give them up on their own.  Our Pedi said with DD we could start introducing sippy cups so she can practice.  She has a straw cup that she loves.  I guess its up to you how hard core you want to be.  DS phased them out on his own.
