SS - night out

SS alert!

I'm MOH in my sister's September wedding... meaning, I have to come up with some kind of plan for a bachelorette... I'm thinking late August or right after a labor day which would put LO at 10 weeks?

I'm bf and have yet to start pumping (next week, I will), So I have zero idea shit how often is have to pump or what I would do if I was out for the night or how it would logistically work. LO eats every two hours now, would I have to pump every 2 hours while I'm away from him to keep up my supply/not get engorged? How would you even do that at a bar?

I think my sister has her heart set on a night away or at least a hotel room, I just can't even wrap my head around dinner and drinks nevermind a night away... but even taking into account that I don't want a night away...

Sidenote - if one more person says "pump and dump! " like they just solved the crisis in the middle east, they're going to get bitch slapped. I've come to hate that expression and the ignorance that goes with it.

So what do you guys think? Is it doable? How would you handle the logistics?

@katekat8721‌ - hi, moh buddy! Are you running into a similar issue?

  • I'm just as confused as you re: pumping/ engorgement/supply. ohmygod it's all so confusing. I would love to hear what others say! As far as overnight, could you coordinate with another bridesmaid to get the hotel set up and stay late but then you go home and everyone else does the hotel thing?

  • I agree that one night isn't going to mess up your supply.  A couple of nights a week, DH feeds my girls bottles during their 2am feeding so I can sleep longer.  I certainly don't get up to pump for that feeding; it would defeat the purpose.  And that gives me a straight 5-6 hours sometimes.  If anything, I just pump after they eat in the morning.  I think you could probably pump a few strategic times throughout the evening and be just fine (like before you leave to go somewhere, after you get back, etc).  I also agree that if you can, you may want to just go home for the night.  I don't think I would feel like being at an overnight bachelorette party with a newborn at home.  I would miss my bed and my baby :-).

Thanks for the responses! I'm glad it won't mess me up too much.

The hotel is up in the air. I live 20 minutes from downtown, I don't know if I'll need to stay all night.

What if there isn't a hotel option anyway, though? Where would you pump, say, after dinner, before drinks? A bathroom somewhere? (Seems not-so-classy to pump in a bathroom at a bar. ..)

I have pumped in my car between dinner and a movie for a girls night. I wore my nursing cover to have more privacy.
I pumped in my car on the 4th. While it wasn't fun, it got the job done.

In a similar situation, I bought a small handheld pump that fit in my purse.  Snuck away to the bathroom a few times throughout the night, pumped (dumped it so as not to have to lug around a cooler), and then returned to the festivities.

  • Ugh girlfriend I hear ya! I just got my MOH dress (ordered when pregnant) and now have to get it altered this week... plus plan the bridal shower for this weekend..fuuuun :)

My sis's bachelorette party is a nightmare. She wanted to originally stay over the weekend 9 hours away from home, then it changed to a weekend in Vegas... but now it's a no go because the girls can't afford to go and/or just don't want to go. It's sad how relieved I am by this! If the long weekend away were the case, I was going to get my own room with hubby and the girls. Spend the day doing bachelorette things and night time and down time with my babies. I am fine with a few hours away from the girls but over a weekend? No. Especially when I'll be returning to work after mat leave!

So now I'm not sure what we're doing but it'll probably be something similar to what you're doing! I just plan on taking my pump and pumping every 3-4 hours. This may mean pumping in my car but whatevs. My boobs get so freaking sore after 4 hours!

I also have no stash at all so that freaks me out :(

Was wondering when this post would come up! I'm in a wedding this Friday that's 3+ hrs away.
I skipped out on the Bach party bc I was 8 mos preg, but am nervous how things will pan out for the festivities this weekend.
We will be taking MIL with us so my husband can enjoy himself a little and not be stuck babysitting the whole time in the room. We feel so lucky to have her help bc we would not be able to enjoy ourselves at all!
As far as getting milk stored ahead of time, I'm with you @katekat8721‌ - I have nothing :(. I came down with mastitis last week and the thought of pumping makes me cringe (the fact that LO has has to nurse off that boob is bad enough).
Because the babe is only 3 weeks, we did a trial this past weekend and left him alone with MIL for 3 hrs while we went to the store and out to dinner (mini vacay!). I would recommend doing some kind of test run with whoever will be watching the babe(s) just to alleviate some stress for you and them! Good luck and try to have some fun!

Thanks so much everyone. I was really anxious about this, but it doesn't sound too bad. I have to start pumping at some point, anyway...

I haven't even thought about what we will do for the actual wedding... that's a whole other thing.

@katekat8721‌ - I knew you'd understand! Good luck! I hope the shower this weekend goes nice and smooth for you!

    LOLz ;)

I've been pumping after each feed, and sometimes will have DH give a bottle of expressed milk so I can sleep a little. Those times I sometimes go 4-5 hours between pumps, and I do feel sore, but nothing crazy. Also, the next time I pump I usually get double my normal amount. So it might be possibly to just skip a session while you're out and pump when your back at the hotel? I'd reccomend picking up some alcohol test strips too, I had a few beers the other night and my milk was back to non-alcoholic faster than I anticipated, so I saved a couple of ounces from being tossed.

  • @lest12 it's hard! I'm here if you ever need to vent!

If you can, maybe try pumping after a feed or pumping one boob while feeding from the other?

Also, beer. Beer is always the answer lol.

  • Take a deep breath! You deserve a night out! Remember breastfeeding will be different at 10weeks. Chances are you won't be nursing every 2 hours. You'll probably need to pump every 4 hours maybe even longer at night. Pumping on the go is fairly easy once you are comfortable with it. You can pump in the car with a cover over you- I even did it once at a bachelorette party in a limo! Although not my preference - I have pumped in public bathrooms. I put my pump on the hook in front of the door and go from there. If you stay overnight in a hotel and don't get drunk ask for a refrigerator in your room to store your milk.

Good luck and enjoy your night out!!

    @katekat8721‌ - Thank you!

I've been waiting for the three week mark on pumping, but it's overwhelming and I have no idea what I'm doing. Do they havw a Breastfeeding for Dummies book anywhere?
