Calgon

I know a lot of you use calgon for hard water. Our water I'd very hard and gyppie, so I want to add some calgon to see if it will help in general with my laundry. I can't seem to find it at any of the stores I frequent so I am going to order it online. I have noticed it is offered in liquid and powder. Which is better? If I get the powder do you think it would be ok to just add it to my homemade detergent mixture or should I just add it separately?

If you use powdered detergent then get powdered. I don't see why you couldn't just add it in with your homemade det either.

We can only get liquid and I use powdered detergent in my FL. It's a bit of a pain to get it added without making a clumpy mess of my detergent.

  • If you can figure out the right proportion to mix it into your homemade detergent, why not. But you should be able to add it separately. Do what is easiest for you.

Hmmm...ours has never caused a clumping issue. I put the powdered detergent into the drum with the diapers and then pour the liquid Calgon into the bleach and softener dispensers. But I'm also having ammonia issues with a couple of diapers, so perhaps I'm not doing it right.

Huh. My machine has a slot for powdered. It mixes it with water before sending it to the drum to wash diapers. I suppose I could use the bleach dispenser for Calgon, but I wasn't sure when that gets added and I want my Calgon there before or at the same time as my detergent.

  • I like the idea of using the dispenser. Especially since it dosent look like I'll be getting the powder. Thought I would be able to order it thru amazon, but it looks like it's unavailable and may not be restocked. Seems to be hard to find the powder in the US. Euroupe, no problem.

Have you looked at Walmart? The newest one near me doesn't carry Calgon of any kind yet, but there's an older one with a bigger laundry additive aisle that has the liquid. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than Amazon, too.

ETA Looks like Walmart.com also carries the 32 oz bottle for $5.34

  • I'm going to check the other walmart next time I'm in town. Otherwise I will use walmart.com for sure.
