Trouble TTC

No O on upped clomid dose?

My husband and I have been ttc for 13 months. My gyn determined that I am not ovulating as my cycles are very long (55 days +). Last month I was put on provera to induce my period, followed by my first round of clomid 50 mg (cd 5-9) . I got a positive Opk on cd 18 and 19 and peak fertility monitor on cd 19 and 20 confirming O. This month they increased my dose to 100 mg. I'm on cd 21 and no signs of O in sight. Is it possible to ovulate later on a higher dose of clomid? (note: I messed up my dosage this month as we were on vacation, and only took 50 mg the first 2 days, could that have also screwed up O?)

Re: No O on upped clomid dose?

  • No I'm not being monitored at all. Just taking the med then calling to let them know if I'm pregnant or not. She didn't discuss with me anything past 2 months, so I have a feeling she might refer me to a RE after this cycle. At least I'm hoping I get somekind of testing done on me and my husband.

  • I'm sorry, but what is HOM?
  • Hi there! I'm glad you O'ed, that's a great step. :)

Other than that, the rest of your situation sounds a little scary. Sounds like your GYN (like most all GYNs) wouldn't know if the Clomid dose (last time or this time) is working, or how many follicles are developing, or even if you've developed a cyst on the med (which can act as birth control because they sometimes secrete estrogen). Also, if you are in a similar situation as @je11ybean85, you would miss the chance to add the right injectible meds at the right time to salvage the cycle and still O on time.

I'm glad you are thinking your GYN wants to refer you to an RE next cycle. That sounds like a great idea. In fact, you might ask him/her to refer you right now, so you can schedule the first testing which needs to be done the day or two after your period starts (if it starts), as well as an HSG test to prove your tubes are clear before any more treatments, which is done between cycle day 6 and CD12, I believe. Otherwise, you'd be waiting a whole other cycle just to schedule in those baseline tests.

Also, if you do get an OPK+ on this Clomid cycle, please keep in mind that it is possible you have way too many follicles for a safe pregnancy. Just a few days ago, a woman on this board had only 4 mature-size-range follicles plus several other smaller ones waiting in the wings, and although she has proven infertility, the doctor still warned against intercourse because she had an 8% chance of HOM, which is dangerous for mom and babies. (Something like 1/3 of triplet births are severely premature or have other long-term consequences, especially problems in brain and lung development).

It's a fine line to walk, because 2-3 follicles is shown to have less than 1% chance of HOM, so it's the number many RE's shoot for, depending on maternal age (several failed cycles with advanced maternal age can tell the RE in some circumstances that an extra follie or two can be a help, not a risk).

So, I would consider abstaining from timed intercourse unless your GYN can get you a pelvic ultrasound to count the maturing follicles, just because sex today, OPK+ tomorrow, and O the next day could result in HOMs.

    Welcome, and good luck! :)
