Random question for you ladies, I know we have a lot of working mamas here!

I'm just fixing up my résumé and getting ready to start sending it out to go back to work. I'm curious as to your opinions about whether or not I should write something in my cover letter about having a baby?

The only reason I'm thinking I should is because of the 1 year maternity leave, there's a 1 year hiatus in my work history. I feel as though I should try to explain it somehow...

NO not in your cover letter. If you are asked about the 1-year gap in your employment history during the interview, that would be the time to explain. But I wouldn't point it out. I don't want my family to be involved in a hiring decision. Some may see an employee with a young family as a risk to scheduling or dedication. So don't put it in the cover letter. Let them meet you and decide for themselves whether they like you better than the other applicants based on your other merits.

I don't work in HR, but I think if I were in your shoes, I'd mention it in the cover letter. But I also think it's how you frame it. And you might want to mention any professional development or training you received during the break to show you were keeping your skills up. Other than that, I wouldn't dwell on it. Focus on the experience you have and what sets you apart from the rest of the candidates. Good luck, mama!

I completely agree. SO was saying "you have to put it in there so they know why you've been off for so long!"

I knew I shouldn't mention it on my résumé though.

I'm actually applying at the company he works for, so he is pretty involved. Haha
