Doing enough with newborn??

Does any other FTM out there feel like she's not doing enough with her newborn??

My guy is 8 weeks old and I am constantly feeling guilty that I'm not "entertaining" him during his every waking hour.  He is awake a chunk of the day and does cat naps more than anything else.  I put him on his activity mat or his swing (that has a mobile) and if he's there, I'll talk to him from where ever I am.  Do I need to be interacting w him every second?  Does anyone else struggle with this?

  • You read my mind. I feel the same way. There's only so much you can say about their playmat activities ("oh yay you hit the monkey for the 800th time.") I'm generally playing music while I try to eat breakfast or clean up so she's at least being stimulated by that.

  • Thank you ladies!  This makes me feel SO much better!!!  I was feeling so guilty like I should be doing something every second.  It's comforting to know others are feeling the same and that others don't feel like they have to be entertaining!  I do leave him on the activity mat often!
  • i was thinking the same thing. I have the tummy time mat that I had her lay on yesterday on her back and look at the things that dangle from it.  She was ok but since only 4 weeks old cant do much.  She loves her swing so she is in that, I hold her or in pack n play, I try to change it up so she is not always in one spot.  Dont worry I was feeling the same way

  • I have been feeling the same way. My ds is only 7 weeks, I have been feeling so guilty when I put him down to do dishes or something.

  • yep ftm as well, glad imnot the only one who feels that way!
  • Baby is fine. They will let you know when they need or want something. With our DS I talk with him when he was awake and I have his attention but I don't go crazy or anything. He likes to sleep a lot at this point still but I know I worried with DS #1 about entertaining him. I would talk to my sister about it and she is the one who told me he was fine. DS #1 is now 3 and is totally fine.

I feel the same! Baby is 8 weeks old! I try to sing to her and look at her after feeding. We got her a little rattle.

  • I feel the same way. My 5 week old and I do tummy time, story time, and I talk to her, but most of the time when she's awake she just wants to eat. But I'd like to do other activities with her. Any suggestions?
