Makes me think of a horse colouration. Not terribly fond of it. My thought would be that the child's parents misspelled Rowan, or are big on the Last name for a first name trend.
i like Rowan better then Roan...had a friend in college who's last name was Rowan and that became his nickname throughout. It is kind of like last name first, but nothing wrong with that.
Roan DOES rhyme with Joan. I prefer (and really like) Rowan, like Atkinson. And many other people's names, by the way. Rowan and Roan aren't that different, and yes, Roan is a type of color of horse.

Sorry, but I don't like the name spelled anyway suggested. Its NMS.

Re: Roan
I love the name Rowan, with that spelling.
When I see Roan I just think of a roan horse. Plus I think people might say it wrong spelled Roan.
I like it
EDIT: Didn't see that you wanted to know what it made us think of. When I hear it I thing of tall, dark, and handsome Irish man. Sounds good to me

It would never, EVER have occurred to me to say Rowan for Roan.
Just use Rowan, which is a perfectly fine name.
Roan is a horse coloration, and I can just imagine the child getting 'Red roan, blue roan, black roan.....' And neighed at.
