Weight Gain

Hey ladies,

So I am a FTM and was just wondering about weight gain. Please Please don't get upset with me for asking this.
I was underweight prior to pregnancy and now at 28 weeks I've gained 27lbs. Doctor isn't concerned and I am trying my best not to be. I've just read that typical pregnancy weight gain is 25-35 lbs. I've still got 12 weeks to go and just wonder if I'll continue to gain weight like I have been or if it will slow down. I've been trying to eat healthier snacks like fruits/veggies/nuts. I know that i need to add in a bit more exercise. Just wondering if I am in the norm or if this is normal for some people. Again please don't get upset with me for asking, I'm just curious. I am trying not to stress about it since my doctor isn't concerned. Its just weird for me since I've always been underweight or normal weight and I don't know why I am freaking about gaining weight especially because I am pregnant. I am sorry in advance if I offended anyone and if I have please tell me and I will remove the post.

Thanks

Re: Weight Gain

  • If your doctor isn't concerned don't be! Being an overweight person prior I have also been obsessing... the most important thing is so stay health for the baby. If you gain another 10 lbs you can lose it!

  • If your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either. Everyone gains weight differently during pregnancy and there really isn't a way to figure out if you will continue to gain weight at the same pace for the duration of your pregnancy. Just continue to live and eat healthy and you will be fine. :)
  • I am in the same boat. I was underweight when I got pg but have already gained 30 lbs at 30 wks. When I told midwife how much I weighed, she said "let's just say you were 'average weight for height'" because my body needed to gain those 10 or so lbs anyway.
I was so sick in the beginning, but all I could stomach was crap like pop tarts, muffins, etc. Now that I've been able to eat healthier and work out some it has slowed down. My midwife even said I could stand to gain a bit more.. But I think she forgot that she fudged my start weight haha.
Like the others said, don't worry until your provider is worried. I'm not one to care how big I get while pregnant, because I know it's normal but I was a little concerned at first until I talked to my midwife, just because it seemed like a lot early on.

  • I second PP's in saying to trust your doc. I was overweight when I got the BFP and they only wanted me to gain about 15lbs. By 20 weeks, I had already gained 13lbs and they were getting concerned...however, my weight gain has slowed and I actually lost 3 lbs from the last appt 2 weeks ago. My point being, you don't really gain weight at a steady pace...some people gain it all in the beginning, some all at the end. Also, since you were underweight, it may come off easier once baby arrives. Even if you do gain a pound a week until baby is born (like you have been on average), that won't put you much above the "normal" suggested weight gain.

  • I'm 5'5" and was 120 pre pregnancy. My doctor told me to gain 30. I didn't gain anything until about 16 weeks and now at 27 weeks I'm 135! My doctor at my 24 week appt told me I should be gaining HALF a pound a week and I'm gaining 2 a week basically. She said she wasn't concerned but that I would probably be at the "higher end" of the max gain (something along those lines)... I feel happy that I've "only" gained 15 but it's also alarming to me that I'm gaining 2 a week so I feel you. But I'm sure your doctor will let you know if she sees it being a problem!
  • I started out a healthy weight with DD and gained 35-40 and it looks like I'm gonna do it again. I lost it all before getting pregnant this time around. My doctor was never concerned with my first and isn't now. He said he knows I'll be more hard on myself so he doesn't need to add his 2 cents:) Just enjoy being pregant!!!!

I was normal weight (a little heavier for me because I had a total thyroidectomy 2 months before I got pregnant) Im at 22 lbs already.

This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
  • I was normal weight pre-preg. I'm 30 weeks and have gained 26lbs. I had hardly gained anything until week 20. I've had a hard time not obsessing after going to the doctor lately, because like a PP said, the gain seems to come in spurts. I gained 8lbs one month, 3 the next, and then I gained 4lbs in the last 2 weeks. I really need to stop worrying since midwife hasn't been concerned. I just keep finding myself trying to apply pre-preg tactics to maintain my weight after I have one of these visits where I feel I've gained too much. But that's just not realistic because I have to eat more than before and cannot exercise anywhere near the way I could before. So I'm really trying to give myself a break, try to eat healthy most of the time (and not give myself hell when I don't), and try to accept the fact that walking a few times a week may be all the exercise I'm able to do at this time. I should really focus on being grateful that the baby is healthy instead of worrying about how I'll take this weight off later.
  • I started overweight, and was told they wanted me to gain no more than 15-20. I started by losing 10 pounds before my first appointment at the office, and then lost 8 more after that. As of my 24 week appointment I had gained 8 back, and it looks like I'm gaining roughly one a week.  I always feel like I am over eating and gaining too much, but I was so sure at my last appointment and the scale only went up the 1 a week.. so I am trying not to stress (also because I am still not at my pre pregnancy weight).

Honestly, if you are underweight, you're body is gonna horde everything it thinks it needs.  As long as you are being smart about what you put in, your body is going to be smart about what it holds on to. Also like PP's have said.. if the doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if the dr isn't worried. Every body does pregnancy a little differently and your body may need the extra weight. But you haven't reached an excessive or unhealthy amount of weight gain, so don't worry about it.

  • I started off too thin according to my OB.  I'm 5'9" and was a size 2.  They told me to shoot for 40, but they'd like to see 45.

  • Man, I gained 55lbs with my first child and I'm at 28wks now and I've gained 44lbs. 12 more wks to go
  • I've always been weight obsessed and lost 20 lbs before getting married in August 2012. I was so proud to keep it off and at first doctors appointment at 6 weeks, I weighed 135 at 5'7". Now at almost 32 weeks, I've put on about 25ish lbs, which is the most I wanted to but I've also been a little lazy with the exercise and I also don't deny myself a treat if I crave it! Enjoy this time as much as possible :)

  • First pregnancy for me.
    Started out @ 157 lbs @ 5'8".
Now I am 30 weeks pregnant and have gained 22 lbs (179 lbs now).
Just eat normally and healthy and your body will do what it needs to do.
Doctor has said all measurements of baby and my weight are normal :)
  • Again, if your doc isn't concerned then you shouldn't be either. I was very sick for about 15 weeks in the beginning of my pregnancy and lost weight, then I got back to my original weight but have only gained 7 since then. I'm 30 weeks and spoke to my doc and they said if gain 10-15 lbs they would be fine with that. So listen to your doc, they will tell you what you need to do. If they aren't concerned, then you shouldn't be.

Right?! I'm pretty much even with this. The only thing my doc has said about it is to watch carbs and sugars - and she only mentioned it because I brought it up first. I haven't mentioned weight since and neither has she.

  • At 29 weeks I had gained 25 lbs and I was not under weight when I got pregnant. My Dr isn't concerned and neither am I. If you were under weight to begin with, it's probably a good thing that you've gained. Just keep up the good work!!

  • So i'm a STM. With my first I gained 50lbs.  My Dr. wasn't worried, because all of my vitals were always good and i'm a generally healthy person any way.

This time around I started 14lbs lighter than when I got ego w/ DD (I was lucky enough to be able to lose all 50lbs + 15 after DD was born... it took a year of hard work, but I got there). However, at 29 weeks, I am 6lbs lighter than I was with DD at 29 weeks.  The nurse and I joke that i'm just that girl who gains 50lbs with every pregnancy.

I would say, listen to your Dr. because each one is different and recommend different things. Good luck!!
  • I was 135 prepregnancy and was told to gain 25 to 35 lbs I'm 29 weeks this week and have only gained 12 so far doesn't seem like a whole lot... But my doctor hasn't said anything about it so I'm not worrying too much ... I do believe if you started underweight you are going to need to put on more than the typical 25-35 lbs

Yup, I have a feeling this is going to be me, too. I'm actually exercising this time around, and I'll still probably gain 50 lb. I just love the sugar. Doc isn't concerned yet.

  • I was underweight with my first and second. I gained 42 pounds both times. This time around I've gained about 17 (32 weeks tomorrow) but I wasn't underweight when we got pregnant this time either. If the doctor isn't concerned you shouldn't be either.
