Trouble TTC

Too late for IUI?

So as I expected I got a positive on an OPK this afternoon. My RE office is closed tomorrow, so I should go in on Sat. morning for the IUI. Should I even bother with the IUI at this point? I'm afraid it will be too late. Should I BD tonight? I was told to BD on Monday and then again tonight if I don't get a positive, then I got the positive this afternoon. I'm so confused. Just looking for opinions.

Re: Too late for IUI?

  • Since YH has MFI, and they scheduled your BDing 3 days apart...I wouldn't do it tonight, I'd let it wait until the IUI.

I would insist on an ultrasound the morning of the IUI to see if the follicles are completely collapsed. If they aren't, it could give you some more confidence in the IUI.

  • On my first cycle I got a positive OPK the afternoon before the evening we were supposed to trigger. I, like you, assumed they would want to move my IUI up to the next day (there was no holiday/weekend issue) but even though they were open the next day the RE still wanted me to trigger that night and come in 36 hours later for the IUI.

So, according to my RE anyway, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I also wondered if it was going to be too late. I would just proceed as normal, but I also could understand if that's not what you want to do.

  • Problem is by tomorrow morning it will have longer than 36 hours since the surge. Everybody I've talked to said today would have been the optimal day. I think we're going to wait until next month and do better monitoring with u/s's, I'd rather spend more money next month and really do it right than wing it and possibly throw the money down the toilet. Just bummed, another month lost.

  • FWIW, it was longer than 36 hours from my surge, I was saying we did the trigger shot and it was 36 hours from that. It was about 42 hours from when I caught the surge.

I think it really depends on your situation. If the IUI is a significant extra cost to you, then I can see delaying it for more ideal circumstances. For us, the meds and monitoring was $1,300, and the IUI was only an additional $350. Since we already paid for the most expensive part of the cycle, it made sense to continue. I can see if your monitoring was cheaper or your IUI was more expensive, that it might make sense to wait for more ideal circumstances. Good luck!

  • For the IUI alone it's almost $700, every u/s is an additional $300, I'm going back and forth with it.

  • Not to mention we BD''d this morning thinking we're probably not going to do the IUI, so I'm thinking that would effect his sample. iI'm thinking just wait until next month, maybe we'll get lucky and the Clomid will help us out. I'm trying to be positive.
