Lately I've been seeing several posts of the "cool and neat idea to share with parents of children" on FB and pinterest. One that really caught my eye as a terrible idea is the one where you cut open a glow stick after breaking the tubes and pour it into bubble mix to make glow in the dark bubbles. I hate that people are sharing it as something cool to do with your kids. I really wish people would think about how unsafe it is.
Think about kids and plain bubbles. They are drenched in the mix when they are done, some will even try to eat the bubbles. The mix always gets spilled at some point.
Now add in toxic and corrosive chemicals and shards of glass. Now, if you look at the glow stick wrapper, it says it's non-toxic. What people don't get is that it's only non-toxic as long as it remains in the plastic tube, this is why glow sticks are labeled 3+, because babies would chew on them, which could end up cracking the plastic, releasing the chemicals into the babies mouth.
Why would anyone ever think this was a cool thing to do without thinking of the ramifications?
I get it though, glow in the dark bubbles are a cute idea, but chemical burns, sick babies, cuts, and embedded glass are not worth it. There are some things you should not DIY. Companies make glow in the dark bubbles, hell, the picture in the post is of the legit company bubbles, not of the DIY bubbles.
