Would you complain/return?

I just pulled a sticker off a pear and there was a big gross hole under it. It's pretty much impossible that somebody didn't notice the hole or that it wasn't there when the sticker was put on, so basically somebody covered the hole on purpose. Would you return a single piece of fruit or complain about it?

I won't because I'm lazy, but I hope they aren't doing this regularly. I might be inclined to complain if it happened again.

Re: Would you complain/return?

  • This brings me back to my days working the service desk at grocery stores....with the exception of the time some genius decided to put all the watermelons outside in 100-degree heat (and even then, why did people think they had to bring me back their nasty watermelons to dispose of???) I tended to side-eye people who returned produce....I mean, produce can be a gamble sometimes; there's only so much the store is responsible for. That said, if you did complain, I'm sure you'd get a refund for it.

I definitely wouldn't return the one pear, but I lean way the other direction and don't return much ever. I would rather eat the cost than go out of my way most times even for something a lot more expensive than a pear. I didn't know if I had too skewed a view. And it wouldn't be about the money so much as the principle that someone might be doing this on purpose.

The situation does remind me of the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer tries to return fruit and gets banned from the store. DH quoted a line to me when I texted him to complain: "Fruit's a gamble. I know that going in."

  • just one of them? I would just toss it. All of them? I'd complain.
  • Meh, one pear?  No.  If it was ongoing and someone was obviously doing it on purpose, then sure.  But I'd probably just cut that part off and eat the rest.

Yeah, that makes sense. Ordinarily I would just cut it off too, but it was a particularly gross looking hole. I envisioned eating one of those giant sand worms from Beetlejuice.
