Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

20 month sleeping and an update..

Asked last wk about sleeping at 20 mos. Until 3 wks ago, G used to sleep 8-6, then began waking up 5:15 - 5:30. We tried moving her bedtime up. At 7:40, she still woke at 5:15/5:30. At 7:20, she slept til 5:45. At 7:00, she slept til 5:30. Should I just try the 8:00 again? Would like her to sleep til 6:00. Maybe she doesn't need as much sleep. ..? Naps slightly improved over 6 days. Only 1 was 45 min. The rest were an hour 10 to an hour 20.
Have 3 month triplets at home too.
Last night, she went down at 7:20 & she's up now at 5:10.

Re: 20 month sleeping and an update..

  • You tried 3 different bedtimes in 1 week. It doesn't seem like enough consistency to have one new bedtime actually have an effect. What does she do when she wakes up? Is she a screamer, or can you let her be in her crib awake? If she isn't a screamer, I'd leave her be in her bed and see of she'll go back to sleep.

  • Sheshe totaled screamer. It worked when we were sleep training for naps at 6 months old, but now when we leave her to scream after 45 minute nap, she will scream for 20 minutes then when I go pick her up, she is shaking because she is so upset

  • Ugh, that sounds tough. Sorry I have no suggestions. DS was pretty easy going with sleep. DD doesn't seem to be so far (though it's still early for her). Good luck!
  • I don't have any suggestions for you - just wanted to let you know you aren't alone.  DS is 16 months and it does not matter what time we put him down, he is up at 5am.  We put him down at 6 - up at 5.  We put him down at 8 - up at 5 and cranky all day.  So, we just get up at 5 and then the whole family takes a nap (at least on the weekends) when he goes down around 12.  We adjusted our bed-time since adjusting his didn't seem like an option : DH and I go to bed at 9 in order to get a good 8 hours in.
  • Try going in with no eye contact, lying her back down and covering her up with her blanket. It works for our DD. She'll usually fall back asleep or at least lay there for another half hour

  • There seems to be potential for it to get better. We obviously cannot go in. .Grace is a non stop active kid and would just keep screaming.

I would go earlier, if possible. My son was much younger when he was waking up at 5:30am every morning (around 11 months) but I eventually pushed his bedtime to 5:30 so he was getting 12 hours. That might be extreme b/c your daughter is older and doesn't need as much sleep, but I always found the earlier he went down, the later he slept. It could also be having new babies in the house is disrupting sleep? Have you tried a white noise machine?
