Let's Talk Gliders

Inspires by the nesting post, can we talk gliders? What do you have? What are you getting? How did you pick? Can you please just tell me what to buy so I can stop thinking about this? ;)

DH is set on a traditional glider, because of sentimental attachment. I would prefer an upholstered chair for aesthetic reasons. However, I'll concede that when I've sat in the cheaper upholstered chairs versus the gliders, I like the glider better (I'm small framed and feel too sunk into the chairs). We picked out a glider/ottoman combo at BRU for about $380, and I don't think either of us can stomach going much over that.

  • We didn't want to spend a lot, so we got the storkcraft hoop glider from wayfair.com.

  • I left the glider up to DH and after multiple stores he decided on the Pottery Barn Kids Comfort Swivel Rocker & Ottoman.  We are ordering it in a color that makes it suitable for our living room or basement should we find that it's not really being used in the nursery.

Oh man, I love this, but something tells me it's going to be wayyy out of my price range.

I just got the Luana glider and ottoman from The Storytime Series. I love it!

  • I just ordered this from Target. It was on sale, I've got a target card, and my nursery furniture will be white with pink/grey everything else. If I hate it, no shame in returning it, but I don't have the budget for a fancy glider.

  • We spent tons of time in the glider when Emily was a baby...now that she's almost 2 we still use it for bedtime/story time and when I'm getting her ready in the morning. I think it is an investment worth making. However, you can find good ones on CL pretty cheap if you keep your eyes open. We have a Shermag and have zero issues. For the boys' room, I got a comfortable rocking recliner from a furniture store because I am hoping to tandem BF these twins and need a bigger chair than a standard glider. I found the recliners at baby stores to be cheaply made.

  • We got one from DH'S grandfather's house. MIL really wanted us to take it and even though it doesn't match a damn thing it is super comfy and was free.
Maybe check garage sales and see if you can find one that way.

I looked into it and I can order new custom cushion for $100. If I can't get over it not matching I may "splurge".
  • I love the upholstered rocker/ gliders but most are way out of my price range. I found a blog that converted an ikea arm chair into a glider... GENIUS! And the best part is that the cover is removable and machine washable! Haven't made the purchase yet but I can't wait to. https://www.mrswigglebottom.com/2011/07/turning-chair-into-swivel-rocker.html?m=1

@lrobi13‌ DH's grandma had a glider in her living room, and that's why he has his heart set on one. He always says 'ahh, it's just like grandma's' when he sits in a glider, so I sort of feel bad wanting something else.

Anyone considering just using the ikea rocker? I was thinking of putting one of those downstairs in the living room too, but they seemed awfully low to me.

@jlz32185 Ah, I love that!  I had seen the IKEA hack where they take the grey wingback chair and make a rocker, and DH loved it.  But when we went and sat in the chair, it was so uncomfortable and we nixed the idea.  This chair looks much more comfy!

@ADH0906‌ It is really comfy! They have a slightly larger one than what is shown in the blog. I think I'm gonna go with the bigger one so that when my LO is older it will still be good for story time and snuggles!

  • We bought the Dutailier Laki Glider. We sat in tons of chairs and this one was the most comfortable and supportive. This is the item I planned to spend the most money on as I figure it will be used the most by DH, me and all other family members. Plus, we eventually want to move from an apartment to a house and well made furniture can always be used in other rooms for a lifetime.
  • I got an upholstered swivel rocking recliner from Best Home Furnishings from a regular furniture store. There were many different fabrics and colors to choose from and we paid $500 before tax. You can also decide you want it to glide instead of rock but we preferred the rocking. We preferred the recliner over an ottoman chair combo because it costs less and takes up less space, and because I would feel less comfortable with the ottoman in the babies room when he or she starts walking and climbing. DD loves to climb all over those.

For me the nursery chair is important. We sit with our 18 month old DD in her chair every day and we have since she was moved to her room at 1 month old. We bought a second chair for the new LO for this reason.

  • I just sat in the one from Target that @sweetmandyb12 bought and it was so nice. I really wish I had bought a glider when I was pregnant with DS1 but MIL and GMIL were insistent that we take their rocking chairs. They are awful even with cushions on them. They look like this. I could never get comfortable in it to nurse and the arms were so hard I had to have a million pillows to rest me/baby on.  I might look into the IKEA chair/hack because with the twins I am going to have a spend a lot of time nursing.

ah, my grandma rocked me in one of those things for forever! !! I think it just left her living room in the last 5 years!

  • We got ours at BRU.  It looks a lot like the Shermag but can't remember if that's the exact one or not.  We bought it after our shower using discounts and our registry completion coupon and it ended up being less than $200.

The amount of use we got out of that thing is unbelievable - totally worth every penny.  It's held up really well and we plan to use it for this baby too.

Also, if you do go with BRU, they have a coupon for 15% off gliders right now:

By the way, @golfingdarwinfish, that glider is BEAUTIFUL!

  • @Irobi13 They last forever! MIL used hers for all three of her kids and it looks brand new. My son loves to bang it around, slam his cars into it, and climbs all over it and still it shows no wear.   I think I had so many issues with it because our go-to nursing hold was the football and it seemed like I never had enough cushion for him.

PBK has a white glider closeout right now for $225 that we've been eyeing. We are *crosses fingers** closing on a house in September and the kids rooms will have carpeting, so a glider may be a better option for us at this point. PBK doesn't have the matching ottoman though, but the glider it's a good deal, anyway.

This is the rocker we had with DS. It's the PBK "Charleston" I looked into getting it reupholstered for DD and I got a quote of over $800! No thanks ;)

I have really bad motion sickness so any type of rocker/glider was not an option for us because it would just make me feel nauseous. We had a spare media room chair which was brown and matched the nursery so that is what we used. I definitely think having a chair of some sort in the nursery is key but just wanted to point out that it doesn't necessarily need to be a glider/rocker. DS just got used to us patting him to sleep, rather than rocking him.

  • I got the Hagen Swivel Glider with the nursing ottoman from a local boutique, but this is it. It was the most comfortable for me (I'm super short) and had hundreds of fabric choices so that made matching the nursery easier.

I didn't know he first thing about them, but i did know that I didn't want to spend a lot. Ended up sitting on one that was $180 at Target and man it was smooth. I registered for that one first and then decided to go with the same brand as the crib and it's still only $230. Figure they are all about the same. Sat in one that was in the $500 range and didn't notice any difference other than trendiness.

  • We're planning to buy this rocking recliner. It's at the upper end of what we can afford for this, but we figured it'd have a longer life of use than a glider. And it's way more comfortable than any of the gliders we sat in.
  • We got a rocking recliner from a furniture store.

  • I was very determined not to get a glider before my first arrived and was pretty sure that I wanted a recliner that rocked.  I ended up buying a used glider that had an ottoman from a resale shop and realized not long after my son was born that it was one of the best decisions I made. I spent hours nursing every night in our glider (sometimes I slept in it!)- my son nursed every two hours until about 12 mo so we logged a lot of time in our chair.  I found that the depth of the seat is super important and I've sat in a few chairs after I had him that would have been super hard to get out of with a sleeping baby b/c the seat was too deep.  I definitely recommend sitting in the chair that you are looking at and getting a feel for how you fit in the space (I know it is tricky b/c of your belly, but my challenges getting up when I'm pregnant are similar to trying to get up with a sleeping baby).  I'm glad that I went for function over style in this case- we are reupholstering the cushions before #2 arrives to give it a little face lift and likely will donate or toss it once we are done having kids.

  • Agree with @MsMacual 100% Don't get a super deep chair! Getting out of those things while holding a baby is no joke. We have the Shermag Glider and Ottoman and I love them.

  • This chair is beautiful but uncomfortable. We feel in love and planned on getting it but one sit and it was off the table. if your tush is wider than a models, I wouldn't recommend it.

  • We have a best tyrp chair and I love it! It was pricey but it was the only piece of furniture I had to buy so I was good with it. It also can be used in another room later on bc it doesn't look babyish. It reclines, swivels, and glides.

You can kind of see it here.

I had bought a wooden rocking chair off of CL, but quickly determined there's no way nursing would be comfortable in it, even with cushions. I seriously had to twist DH's arm to see the value of a glider and talked him into a $200 glider budget. I sat in a couple lower priced gliders and wasn't impressed with the comfort. After looking high and low I found a glider/ottoman combo on amazon (pretty ugly, but looks so comfy!) that had great reviews and is a faux leather, which is really important to me for cleaning purposes. It's sitting in a box in my living room waiting to be assembled :)

  • I am getting a glider recliner from BRU. Since I work nights I wanted to be sure we got one that DH will be comfortable in too, as he will be doing night time feedings 3 nights a week. It's on the smaller side so I don't think I'll have a problem getting out of it with baby.

Since I first posted on this thread, I've gone out and looked at some with my mom...and we found one!! Art Van Clearance Center, originally $1200, we're getting it for $250! And it's my birthday present from them! Love it! It reclines, and I could get an ottoman later if I want. Looks better in person, but it's super comfy and awesome.

That's a great price! Woohoo for crossing things off lists!

  • Babies R Us $230 if I remember correctly... I'm hoping I love it because they didn't have a floor model but getting gray cushions was a must and I didn't care for tue look of the fully upholstered chairs I found.
  • I really wanted the Pottery Barn Kids upholstered rocker too, but couldn't stomach the thought of paying $1,200 for just the rocker alone.

So, I found this one at Babies R Us.  It's super comfy and DH loves it too.  We got it in navy blue to match baby's nursery.

  • Here is what we have! I love it and it is sooooooooooo comfy. Although, I do admit, the thought of a recliner never entered my mind and I kind of wish it had. This is definitely a bulky piece and takes up quite a bit of room. Plus, since it doesn't recline, less comfy to sleep in if I feel like I need to if LO needs me frequently throughout the night or something.

We purchased this one!  We don't have a baby to try it out yet with, but we love it so far!  It's narrower, which we wanted because we have a small/crowded nursery, but I could see that it might keep some people from liking it.
