Toddlers: 24 Months+

Climbing out of crib

My 25 month old discovered how to climb out of his crib today. He was in there playing with his toys while I went to the bathroom and he next thing I know he is standing next to me in the bathroom laughing mischievously because he could now climb out. He is bigger for his age...... 34 lb and in the 99th % for height. I have had the crib in the lowest position for about nine months already. I assumed that we would have to convert his crib into a toddler bed (it's a four in one) but DH laid him down for his nap and he did not climb out and took a nap. When I went to get him out though, he was in mid climb down the crib. I'm confused if he needs to be switched yet or not since he doesn't try to climb out when he's tired and wants to sleep. At the same time though I don't like the idea of his climbing the crib if he really wants out. Any advice? TIA

Re: Climbing out of crib

  • Now that he knows he can do it, you should probably either switch to a toddler bed or if you want to keep him contained and the legs on your crib are short enough, you can take the bottom of the crib off and drop the mattress onto the floor inside the crib frame. We just did this when DD climbed out last week. If the mattress on the floor leaves a big gap under the frame, you can buy a really cheap mattress to put under yours to boost it up a little higher.

  • It all depends on your LO.  DD climbed out probably around that age.  She surprised me by not only climbing out but coming downstairs and walking into the kitchen.  But once she discovered how she didn't really do it again.  She ended up staying in her crib until after she turned 3 because she didn't try again.

I'd try to put him in his crib again and see what he does.  If he continues to climb out go ahead and switch him.  But he might surprise you.
  • I put my LO in a sleep sack. I'm not ready to move him to a toddler bed yet since I'm still in the process of child proofing his room. It works lovely for now.
  • I would transition now.  I always thought I'd keep DD in her crib until she was 18 (joke, obviously) but at 21 months I moved her to a twin mattress on the floor.  Childproofing aside, I'd rather deal with her coming in to our room than falling out of her crib and risking a head injury.
  • We put our LO in a sleep sack too to hopefully prolong crawling out. The zippy has worked great so far!
  • If your crib is higher in the back than the front, you can turn it around so the shorter side is against the wall.
