Multiples

Intro!!!

Hey everyone, I am happy to get to intro on this board (after I lurked for a couple of weeks).  We are 7 weeks pregnant with twins from FET#1 and both embryos stuck.  I was really nervous and scared at first.  I feel like I have heard so much about twins and their early arrivals and long stays in the NICU that have just made me paranoid.  We got to hear their little heartbeats last week and I do feel like that calmed my nerves a little, which I'm sure is normal.  I am planning to join a local MoMs group when I start 2nd tri. so hopefully between those ladies and you ladies I can learn a lot.  I have my first appt. with my new OB tomorrow, I decided to switch once we found out there were 2 babies in there, mostly because the hospital we are wanting to deliver at delivers the most multiples in the city (and has a level 3 NICU), and the OB deals with a lot of IVF moms.

Question: Are there special questions I should ask the new OB because there are 2 babies instead of just 1.

Re: Intro!!!

  • Hi there. Welcome, and congratulations! I definitely recommend reading "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads" by Barbara Luke/Tamara Eberlein. A lot of the advice there is very helpful, and I credit some of it with helping me to carry my twins to 37 weeks.

I was extremely scared of all of the possibilities when I found out I was carrying twins, but I was very fortunate and ended up having a very healthy, fairly uneventful pregnancy. In fact, there were far fewer complications with my twin pregnancy than there were with my singleton.

I would definitely check with your OB to see what their thoughts are on how late you can continue to work and how far along they will allow you to go before inducing or performing a C-section. Good luck!!

  • @MissEm15 I felt like I did a ton of research, but I think I got lucky because it was stated on his website that he handled a lot of patients after they were transferred from a specific fertility clinic (not mine) so I called the office and they told me that they have handle a lot of IVF patients.

  • Congratulations and welcome! I asked my OB what differences in care I would receive for multiples. I also asked about seeing a perinatalogist for advanced level ultrasounds. I also asked about his policy on c-sections (whether he would do breech births, for example).

  • Welcome and congrats! I don't have much to add to previous posts as far as ?s for OB - you might want to ask them how much weight gain they recommend. Joining a MOMs group is great! I also got a lot of info from reading back-posts on this board.

  • Congratulations! I'm also pregnant with twins from FET #1.

I was pretty much where you are at 7 weeks...reading all the scary stories about the complications of having multiples. Not going to lie, I still worry at 18 (almost 19) weeks, but as we pass milestones it does get better :-)

Some of the questions I asked the OB involved delivery and their policies on c-sections (not that I'm against a C-section -- in some ways I'd actually prefer it -- but I just wanted to know what I was looking at).

  • Congratulations!  I also rec Dr. Luke's book.  I had 2 good size babies, with no Nicu time.  My best advice is listen to your body & don't over do it.  Rest a lot.
  • Welcome. I am at the exact same point- 7 weeks with twins and having the same exact thoughts these days!
