Amoxicillin

And breastfeeding.

Thoughts everyone?  I've asked the doctor and he said it was fine for nursing mother's.  The pharmacist said they prescribe the same medication to infants.  And that the only issue might be that he may have loose stool.  Which at this point with him starting to really like solids, might help his constipation.

As a third resource I went to Kelly Mom and looked it up.  It's listed as an L1 for lactating mothers.  Which if I read correctly, has no known risk.

Has anyone been in this situation.  What did you do?

Re: Amoxicillin

  • I'm pretty sure I took amoxicillin (whatever, spellcheck) while I was breastfeeding.  If you're still concerned, there is an app (and maybe a website?) called MedScape.  You can look up a medication to see the warnings, indications, etc.

Also, there is a website that the BF board always suggests, but I can never remember the name.

  • Amoxicillin is ok while breastfeeding. LO and I happened to be sick at the same time and my doctor prescribed me amoxicillin and a couple other things. When LO went to his appointment later with his pediatrician, she double checked everything I was prescribed. Since LO and I would both be on amoxicillin, she slightly lowered his dose, just to be extra cautious.

    Will do.

The funny thing is, other than swollen tonsils, I feel perfectly fine.

  • I just got done Amoxicillin for a sinus infection. I ignored it for as long as possible, but finally went to a Dr. I just made sure that both LO and I had yogurt everyday while I was on it. The only problem I encountered was stained teeth (I didn't know this was a side effect, but it said it on the bottle)

The Dr wanted me to take 2 other meds also (allegra and flonase) This didn't seem right so I doubled checked with the pharmacist and she said just stick to the antibiotic. It worked really quick, so I hope you're better soon too.

I was going to say that too!  I think we read each others' minds sometimes.
  • I agree with the probiotics. I think it helps prevent yeast rash for the baby.
