Talk to me about babyproofing

We a have a 1920s bungalow. It's old and smallish. It has beautiful hardwoods and trim and is full of our antique furniture. Great place for a baby, no? Anyway I have stupidly put off baby proofing because I knew it would mean some changes. Please tell me what you have done and are still planning on doing. I have a lock on the cleaning cabinet, some areas with foam tiles, foam things for the doors to keep him from shutting them, a playpen on the way (goodness I hope it gets here today). I moved the coffee table with sharp edges and put covers in the sockets. What else? Is it too much to wrap everything in bubble wrap? Maybe I should just wrap DS in bubble wrap, that would work right? TIA

I've got no advice since I haven't done a single thing but you cracked me up :)

We learned as went went along with DD1. We got rid of coffee table bc it was glass. End tables have cushions and we keep all frames and knick knacks out of reach. We baby proofed all cabinets and drawers when she figured out how to open them. Gates at top and bottom of steps,A huge gate around the tv stand which prevents her from being able to touch the tv. Also door knob stoppers once she figured out how to open the doors. We are totally prepared for DD2 now!

I'd lock all your cabinet's not just the cleaning one.  LO has decided he really enjoys opening and closing the doors and I had to stop him from closing them on his fingers.  Our main living space is open concept so we need to really baby proof everything.  I've been baby proofing as I watch him because he finds things I wouldn't have thought to baby proof.

Aside from locking the cabinets with cleaners in them and covering wall sockets, we haven't done much yet. I plan to watch and see what she likes to get into and go from there, but our furniture isn't anything I would worry about and we don't have anything on tables. DS didn't need any baby proofing, but I think DD is a bit more curious.

We put a really thick blanket over the stone in front of our fireplace (it's raised maybe it's called a hearth?) Gates, outlet covers, door knob covers (not on yet), foam on the coffee table corners, I think that's it. We also ordered an 8 panel gate so we can contain him.

@dhaueisen‌ Any recommendation on what to do with cords. He is obsessed!!!!! I ask DH if they made wireless lamps. He said no. I'm seriously considering taking all the table lamps out. I told DH I was going to buy fake snakes and hide them around the house as cord decoys to entertain DS. :)

@jdoud77‌ Did you use packing tape to tape wires? Did you tape them up high?

Nothing yet, we wouldn't survive without her playpen though. I will be ordering a gate to go around our fireplace. A baby gate to seperate her from going into the front entrance ( it's got super hard tile in it. A latch on the cupboard under the sink that contains cleaning supplies, and some outlit covers.

My pedi recommended toilet locks, but I think as long as you keep the door closed it may be fine.

I agree with any pp who said anchor furniture. I share this blog article whenever this topic comes up. It's heartbreaking but really reminds you that even small furniture poses a risk. I know we have had a lot of sad articles lately, but all with important messages. I'll never get this story out if my mind and will secure every piece if furniture that has the potential to tip.

@krose I read that article when I was pregnant. I cried forever. DH had to calm me down. It is heart wrenching and scary.

I had an official certified baby proofer come out to the house and point out everything. We anchored furniture and tvs in 3 rooms that she would be in. We put gates up on the stairs. We put foam around fireplace and put new outlet covers- we did change some of the door stoppers because babies choke on the white rubber ends. We put an oven lock on and cabinet locks. We put door locks on the other rooms. We put window locks on in her room and our room so they cannot open more than 4 inches I believe and also blind cord ties.

How did you find this person? I want one! @bpietronicco‌ Also the foam you used, is it like the foam that goes around pipes? And what did she suggest you do with cords?

Does anyone have any suggestions for register vents? E got his thumb stuck last week. :(

We looked at replacements but I haven't found one that I think would be much better. Some of the decorative ones have sharp metal and I'm worried he would scratch himself.

I need to put up gates this week. My LO is now going up the stairs and being quite the explorer. We will anchor some bookcases and the dressers in his room too. Outlet covers are on but we need to lock some cabinets.

Any recommendations for what you do with your sliding glass doors? My LO is obsessed with standing and looking out and has fallen and hit his head on the door\glass too many times.

@Salemkitty13 I don't know if they make anything to keep cords out of reach. I would probably use tape for lamps or try to arrange your furniture in a way that the cord and outlet is behind a piece of furniture and out of reach.
Today Zulilly has cord guards that go around wires against the wall.  They also have the foam to go around corners.  My house, the former owners had kids and left it baby proofed for us, which is wonderful, but we have the foam around the fire place and it's great, very hard to come off.  Not sure if Zulily has the same brand we have.
