TTC after 35

Let's chat about our ovaries

So I'm still pretty new to being off BC and listening to my body more for signs of Oing, etc. For the first month, I felt minor discomfort in the ovary region on my left side... one month later, felt the same thing on my right. This month (today) I am feeling it again on my right side and was worried that a) something is wrong and b) what I have been feeling was not in fact my Oing. A little google search later I discovered that this is not uncommon and it got me wondering how many of you ladies have this happen. Do you ever have it on both sides on a particular month?

Re: Let's chat about our ovaries

  • What kind of pain are you talking about? It is a dull pain that lasted for about 20 minutes (generally that's Oing), or is it really sharp? If sharp-- it may be an ovarian cyst.
When I got off my IUD and when I was on my IUD I got some cysts. They eventually went away, but the pain was not pleasant.
  • Loading the player...
  • Definitely dull and short-lived. Nothing sharp.

Here is some more food for thought:
"Although you have two ovaries, ovulation does not necessarily alternate back and forth between them each cycle. Furthermore, scientists have recently come to believe that in the event that one of the fallopian tubes is blocked or there is a minor issue, the other tube's fingerlike tentacles -- which whisk the ovum into the tubes -- can actually "walk" to the other side and grab an egg from the other fallopian tube."

***ALSO: When I had a cyst, I could feel it if I laid down on my back and massaged my hands over the ovary area. It's very painful. If you don't feel anything like that, my assumption is it's just hormone body changes or you are ovulating from the same side from last month.
  • Since my loss I have had ovulation pain (known as mittelschmerz in German). Maybe I had it all along and never paid attention, but it notice it now.

  • I don't notice ovulation pain every month but when I do it can last on and off all day, noticably on one side or the other.  Sometimes I make note of the side sometimes I don't.  You can ovulate from one side and then the same side the next month as opposed to common belief as@lgsdesigner   stated.  Sounds like O pain to me... Best wishes!
  • I have had pains on both sides around ovulation time, but I have no idea if they were actually ovulation pains.  I think I'm just kind of hyper-sensitive to every twinge and gurgle I feel in the general neighborhood of my reproductive organs these days.

  • I have felt my O almost every month since I first got my period when I was 11. If it feels more intense every so often, then I know that I most likely have had the cyst that forms to release the egg burst and released some chemicals that hurt.

But if it feels odd to you or different than what you normally feel, get it checked out-- can't hurt.

  • I don't normally notice my ovaries.  This cycle though, I've been having twinges, mostly on my right side, from about a couple of inches from my hip bone all the way down the pelvic area.  Occasionally, I feel it on the left side too.   They started 1 or 2 DPO and are very minor (Now at 14 DPO).  I have tried massaging the area to see if I can find a bump - no bump, and no sensitive area.  The worry is definitely a bigger problem for me.  My plan is to see the doctor if it doesn't clear up with my period.  I'm overdue for an exam anyway.

Incidentally, did y'all see the news item on pelvic exams thought to be not so necessary anymore?

  • I tend to get some pretty strong cramps around 'O' time. Sometimes it lasts a good day and it is SO uncomfortable!

  • I want to know where that factoid came from-- that the tentacles "walk" over and grab an egg from the other fallopian tube. Because that is some crazy stuff.

  • Some months I feel sharp twinges like a pinch on either side. This month I felt dull cramping that lasted a couple hours on the day before my OPK pos sign. We BD the day before the cramps and the 2 days after.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • I've usually had ovulation pain on my right side more so than my left. Nothing too bad, just noticeable.

  • This cycle was the only time I've felt O pains. For me it was right in between the ovaries. It lasted a few hours then it stopped. A few days past O I had bad cramps on my left side . My RE said that the pains was because I had majority of the follies on that side. Also after the egg comes out sometimes fluid gets inside the casing. I talked about this on a post I created
  • Ive had mid cycle pains that i suspect to be ovulation…..for me its pretty painful but short lived.

I can't say for certain that thats what it is though, since i wasn't temping.

  • That's a good question @Hallowvic I'd like to know the answer too
  • For me, the cramps come before then stop once I've actually released the egg.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....
