Educate me on CDing a NB

We didn't start CD with DS until he was about 5 months old, so CDing a NB is new territory to me.

I'm thinking prefolds and covers is the option that makes sense for our budget, but we've never done PF's before. Any rec's on brands? How many we should have?

Sorry if this is posted somewhere else, looked back and couldn't find a thread.

  • GMD prefolds are the most popular.  I would recommend at least 2 dozen of each size (newborn and small).  Even if you don't use the newborn ones for very long, they have tons of other uses around the house.  My favorite covers are Thirsties.

  • I hate aplix, so I'm not sure.  I think I have the Duo Wraps, but there is size 1 and 2.  I find them to fit for a very reasonable amount of time.  I usually hate buying anything that doesn't come in OS.

  • Prefolds and covers are a very popular nb option. We used all prefolds, but lots of people like to throw some fitteds, like workhorses, in the mix for all the nighttime changes you will be doing.
36 changes is a good number, with 6-8 covers.
GMD orange edge nb prefolds are super popular, but they don't always last long enough to fit into a one size stash. It depends of what your OS stash is and the shape of your baby. Some people skip nb size and start with smalls, which usually just give you lots of extra bulk at first, or have a mix of nb and small sizes. Flats are an even cheaper option that will fit no matter the size.

IMO, GMD is pricy for prefolds. We got our nb in a seconds sale, but all our other sizes came from nickis at a fraction of the cost, and I love them.

As for covers, you will need a true nb size to fit right away, but then you can run into the same problem of needing to fill the gap between nb and OS. I like to have a mix of nb and thirsties size1s/ assunta tiny covers that are adjustable and fit to 16 lbs or so.

Another option is to have a "transition" stash to fill the gap, like kawaii P&Ns, which are a smaller, inexpensive pocket.

I really like my blueberry NB covers. Their aplix is insanely sticky. Thirsties new aplix is supposed to be good, so if you go with thirsties, make sure you buy the new style.

I have some gmds and some nickis. You can definitely tell the gmds are thicker and more absorbent, but you change a NB so frequently it really isn't that big of a deal.

I would definitely get a few fitteds too for overnight. They are easier to put on in the dark, and will hold more once LO starts sleeping longer stretches.

Thirsties NEW aplix is fantastic. Thirsties old aplix is absolutely awful.

I like both the Duo and the sized covers.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. I really like our GMD prefolds. And the thirsties covers are great. I liked the RaR nb covers too, they run a little smaller. The size 1 duos fit well from the start for us LO was 8-3. The double gussets are where it's at! Also, the new aplix on thirsties is awesome, I had one duo with aplix and that was my favorite cover. On the littles I think the aplix just gets a better fit.
Also, I loved (&still love) the GMD workhorses, especially in the nb size they are $5ish new and are awesome MOTN changes. We got an extra week or two out of the nb workhorses after she outgrew the nb prefolds bc the side tabs gave us some extra width.

    Edit: typing is hard
  • I bought a newborn stash and DD hated the prefolds/covers.  We ended up just using disposables until we tried her one size diapers at 6 weeks and they fit :-)  (she was 7lb5oz at birth)

Did she not like the wetness against her skin?

  • I did Indian cotton prefolds. Had 24 bit didn't like the stiffness of the bleached over the unbleached, so I sold the bleached. Probably should have replaced them with a dozen more unbleached for EOD laundry, but I didn't.

The newborn workhorses lasted about 4 weeks for my 8lb-14oz newborn. I bought 6. They were great for middle of the night changes. I really like the Thirsties Duo Wrap in aplix. The Sweetpea cover is a nice trim option as well, just not for over a bulkier workhorse.

I'll also second getting some kawaii P&Ns for easier changes (on the go, hubbies, grandparents, etc.). MH refuses to use the prefolds b/c they aren't "easy" so having some pockets or AIOs was important for us.

I started my NB stash with 24 unbleached GMD NB prefolds that I bought used. I would have taken bleached if that's what the person was selling, but I'm glad I got the unbleached. I paid just about 1/2 price for my used ones and just resold them for the same price. I had a few cheap fitteds and some flats. I ended up not liking the prefolds so we didn't use them a lot and I bought more flats and better quality fitteds for overnight. I also bought some Kawaii P&N's for overnight/husband, grandma use and I love them! I wish I had bought them before my baby arrived as we used disposables overnight for the first couple of weeks. I really like my Thirsties cover, I have snap. Also my Blueberry Capri nb cover. Sweet Pea covers are good too, nice and trim but they are narrow so they don't fit over much bulk.

ETA: I wanted to add that I really like my Rumparooz newborn covers (I have a snap and aplix). I think around here they are a love/hate thing, but for my LO they fit great and I really love them.

I had a dozen each GMD prefolds in small and newborn, plus about 18 Kissaluvs fitteds. For covers, I had three NB Prowraps, one Bummis Super Brite (great for my tiny 5 pounder!) and 3 Thirsties Duo wraps. The duos didn't fit until she was a few months old, but she was teeny.
