tips for helping to learn how to walk

My almost 10 month old is taking about four of five steps here or there, but then she always falls. I think she's doing really well but it's a slow process...is there anything I can do to help encourage her to learn how to walk faster?

Re: tips for helping to learn how to walk

  • My little man is doing the same! It's so fun watching them learn. Just let Her practice she will get it soon enough :) They all learn at their own pace, and just think about how much more they will get into when more mobile! Don't rush it.

  • Nope. Just let her do it at her own pace!

  • At 10 months old you shouldn't even be expecting her to walk (though of course some kids are) so you just need to let her learn at her own pace.  Falling is part of that process :)  Does she have a push toy to walk behind?

I find this funny because I am not helping DD at all.  I have a toddler so Im totally ok with her not walking for a while.  Plus I agree with other PP....just let her learn at her own pace.

  • Let her go at her own pace. Give her lots of time on the ground to move around. Why try to rush her?
  • I'm not "expecting" her to walk, she started trying totally on her own...and I'm so proud of her for that. Just everyone I talked to seemed to tell me that their child learned how to walk right away they made it out to sound like it was something babies just "learned" and I'm learning. She's my first child. and I noticed it was taking her awhile, and that it didn't fit what everyone else had told me. But you all are right: i need to let her learn at her own pace.

  • Crawling is actually wonderful for babies, I never encouraged my babies to walk because of that.  They still picked up walking fine, DS at 13 months, DD at 14.5, they say as long as they are walking at 18 months it's fine...so what's the rush?

Here's some more information on the benefits of crawling:
Crawling helps to develop balance, strengthen muscle tone and develop eye-hand co-ordination. This is necessary for future reading writing and physical activities. Bilateral integration is improved through crawling as both hands, legs, eyes and ears are required to work in synchronisation, increasing left and right brain co-ordination. The crawling movement is repetitive and this stimulates brain activity to develop cognitive processes such as concentration, memory, comprehension and attention.
