Trouble TTC

I'm a newbie!

Good evening everyone!

I'm pretty new here, have just been looking around up until now.

I finally had a check up at my gyn today and I was really nervous about the visit.  My husband and I finally decided to "bump up" (no pun intended) our efforts for ttc so I had made this appt to explore our options for fertility treatments.  I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2010.  Today during the visit, my doctor said they would refer me to a RE to start the testing.  After I left the appt,  I had this overwhelming feeling of reality.  I knew this time would come since being diagnosed and have been able to be more comfortable with the condition since.  For some reason I lost it in the car on the way home.  I know everyone has been through so much more than me, but I just wanted to get some opinions on the moment when things finally sink in.  I thought I had  made it through the worst (actual diagnosis) but being referred to a RE just "cemented" it.  Does anyone have any advise for someone starting out or any stories of when they had their "holy crap" moment?  Looking forward to learning so much from everyone!

Re: I'm a newbie!

  • Welcome!  I'm still pretty new here too.  I have found a lot of comfort and information from the amazing ladies on this board.  I had my "holy crap" moment in January.  I knew my cycles were all messed up, and I called my ob/gyn because it had been over 3 months since I'd gotten my period.  After asking me what was going on, the receptionist wouldn't let me schedule an appointment with my usual NP, and told me I had to schedule an infertility consult with the doctor.  Total meltdown freakout.  It's not like I had any idea what I was in for yet,  it was just the realization that one of my long time fears was coming true.
You're definitely on the right path with going to an RE.  The beginning is a lot of testing, and it can be very overwhelming, but just try to take it one step at a time.  Good luck with everything, hopefully you won't have to be here long!

  • Welcome! Sorry you find yourself here. There are lots of PCOS ladies here (including myself). I am glad to hear you are getting involved with an RE. That is my next step in a few weeks (after the TWW =( ) I had a feeling it was going to be difficult TTC with a PCOS DX and no regulated cycles. Have had lots of false hope from my Drs. But I myself am hopeful and try to stay positive otherwise I dig a hole and lay in it which gets me nowhere. =) Good luck on your new plan hope your stay here is short and sweet =)

  • Welcome. Sorry you have such a tough step to take. If it makes you feel any better, once we met with our RE we felt really relieved and hopeful!

My GYN had been telling me it's time to get help for about 3 years, but I just said, "Oh we're not ready to do that yet." Of course she knew it wasn't going to happen naturally, but we just had to do things in our own time I guess! So I think it's very courageous of you to take this step and I don't think you'll regret it. :)

    ***All Welcome***
  • Welcome! It's a tough road to travel, but you're certainly not alone. I was seeing my OBGYN initially for oral meds and would get in the car and cry for a few min in the parking lot after appts - even the good appts! I was overwhelmed with the idea of fertility treatments in general. I agree with @BunnyBear‌, ince we actually met with an RE we started to feel a bit more comfortable with the process. I still have freak out moments occasionally but remind myself to focus on the end result, not the means!

  • Welcome OP!  Sorry you have to be here, but I do think you will find this to be a supportive group.

My "holy crap" moment was when I reached the one year mark of TTC.  It was also my first (and current) unending cycle.  Currently on CD 90.  I had my RE consultation last week and was prescribed progesterone to jump start my period. I don't have a diagnosis yet, but I do feel better being under the care of an RE so that we can have a plan in place.

Good luck with your RE and please keep us posted.

  • Hi, so sorry you are having to go through all of that, but on the upside you are certainly not alone and everyone on here seems to be super supportive and caring!
I also recently had a rough time with coming to terms with the reality of it all. I went in to see my obgyn with some symptoms and concerns that we had officially reached the (dreaded) year mark and her first thought was pcos. i was squeezed in that day for an ultrasound which found only one large cyst. that ob referred me to their IF & diagnostic specialist ob who sat me down in his office and point blank explained his plan to do follow up ultrasound, b/w, HSG, SA, etc. and then talk clomid if it turned out i wasn't ovulating & surgery to remove cyst. he also explained exactly when we were to BD in the following month and how to go about telling my husband all of this. It all happened so quickly and although I appreciate the dr being so to the point, i sat in my car afterwards for i don't even know how long crying and trying to process everything. i think i knew that we'd be entering into IF treatment when i went for that first appointment, but i guess i was somewhat in denial and thought maybe they'd tell me it was a simple fix. i also have a history of thyroid issues & i have been simultaneously checking for related problems, so i decided to see an RE because it seemed like the right course of action. I think the best thing we've been doing is trying to keep a sense of humor about it all & thinking of all the testing and planning as a good thing. as in, after doing all of this we will know what's going on and how to go about making it work. after trying for so long with no real intervention, this takes some of the guess work out of it. when we first started and i was getting frustrated month after month someone on here gave me some wonderful advice to the effect of..think of it as more time to prep for when it does happen. think of things you might want to do before then, talk about how you'd handle different situations. instead of trying to not focus on making a baby, focus on putting that energy in a positive light.
looking forward to your updates. best of luck!

    Married Oct 2011
NTNP for about a year before actively
    TTC since April 2013
Currently testing for infertility cause and hormone imbalance.
Infertility & ovarian cyst diagnosis: May '14
B/W: 'good', more ordered to check antibodies & progesterone
    SA: Normal :)
U/Ss for cyst: who the f knows
DH's cat scan: showed encapsulated fatty growth; u/s: didn't really show much more
Breast Specialist: Most likely a large fibroid, but keeping an eye on it, repeat u/s every 6mos
HSG: clear tubes, uterus is A-ok
WHAT'S NEXT: DH's consult with surgeon to discuss next step for growth, either biopsy or surgery~Big discussion with Dr. before any possibility of starting Clomid, since I'll want another u/s before and to be monitored and he doesn't seem into that. I had to force his hand just to order the AMH test so may be looking for another OB

  • Thanks ladies! I think part of what scared me the most was I wasn't actually expecting the referral to the RE.  I had read from several people that their gyn did testing and prescribed clomid (or other oral meds) as a starting point. I have been telling my husband for weeks about every detail and story I could read from websites and forums. So I expected to stay with them and do testing and oral medication before having to move on. When they mention RE, my stomach dropped.  He wasn't able to come with me for this appointment so when I called him in the parking lot, I lost it. I felt like I had completely prepared myself for what I thought was going to happen, and I felt like someone ripped the rug out from under me.

  • Welcome! My holy crap moment didn't set it until about a month after seeing the RE, at the conclusion of testing when my HSG revealed a whole lot of issues that need surgery :(
Hang in there, the testing phase can be strenuous and too much information to take at times. Be careful about googling/reading too much into things, it can drive you crazy! Hope your stay here is very short and sweet
  • Welcome!

Even though it might seem more intimidating at first, I promise you'll be *so much* better off with a RE than your OB/GYN.
