I've been trying to write this for the past 20 minutes and each time I almost get to the end I manage to hit the wrong piece of my laptop and instead of backspacing the whole screen goes back and then I lose everything. Grrrr.
Anyway, I'm back!
First of all, I have to say that old school country music may be the finest thing ever to listen to while you're having a medical procedure. If you haven't listened to George Strait sing "All My Exes Live In Texas" on the stereo system while having contrast shot through a catheter into your uterus, it is a thing of beauty. Also, light up speculums are hilarious to me for no apparent reason.
So, it wasn't too painful. The tech that prepped me said that for most people it's roughly 3X as painful as you'd find a Pap, and that was pretty right on. Since I don't normally have a problem with painful Paps, this wasn't too bad for me. My radiologist had actually been a patient of my IF/RE clinic, so it was kind of cool to meet someone who'd been through it and have them perform the procedure.
Good news: My right tube is open for business. I think that's the side the ectopic was on, so it's good to know that it's okay. Not so good news: The left tube is blocked. And, actually, I have a question for anyone who's been through this: The radiologist said that it could be completely blocked, but that it could be a mucous plug that's blocked it and the dye might take it out. I thought that if the dye was going to take out the blockage they would see it while the HSG was being done. Is it possible for the dye to clear the blockage after it's been shot it and after the procedure? Anyone heard of that? Also, I think I've heard it's possible that when you have one tube it can pick up eggs from the opposite ovary, is that right?
Anyway, I'll talk to my regular RE doc tonight to go over my monitoring schedule for the rest of the week (it's stick things up my vag week, apparently). Hopefully the monitoring will show that we can start to try again this cycle and it'll be the first unprotected baby-makin' sex we've had since February.
So, I'm hopeful. I'd love it if both tubes had been free and clear, but I'm hopeful. And after I talk to my doc I think I'll feel like I'm finally getting somewhere.
