Any ideas on what I can use if dealing with a ton of itchy chigger bites? I used to put nail polish on them to help with itching but don't know if that's a good option now.
I think its your best option still. Those things are nasty and an infection from itching would be worse than exposure to some chemicals... but you could get some OPI or other approved brand if needed.
I use hot water on a wash rag (the hottest that comes out of the tap ) and press it on my skin for mosquito and flea bites. I expect it would work for chigger bites? It causes a local antihistamine reaction that stops the itching. It works pretty well and no chemicals.
I have an extra horrible reaction to them and had to get a steroid shot and soak my feet in dialuted bleach. Probably not the safest right now. I tried everything before that though and I found that Vicks vapor rub was the only thing that offered any relief. I have read mixed reviews on it being safe during pregnancy. I used it when I had a cold at about 6 weeks
Tea tree oil helps skin irritations-- I've used it to stop itching from ringworm eww
It's anti-septic and anti-fungal
^^Yes it is, but if you're not familiar with using oils, tea tree is one that is supposed to be diluted with a carrier oil in case of sensitive skin. I usually use coconut oil. I rub that mixture on my face when I have some breakouts and it seems to help.

Oops! Sorry I didn't think of mentioning that! I have two bottles of tea tree oil. One that is 100% pure tea tree and the second is a pre-diluted one from the body shop. I use the body shop one when I don't have time to dilute with coconut oil. Thanks @Lanatir for mentioning that

It seems like all of the options just talk about relieving the itch, but since the bug is actually burrowed under your skin I don't think it will stop itching, except for the clear nail polish. You need to suffocate the bug. And for future reference. If you put deodorant in places you're susceptible to get chiggers it helps keep the skin dry and they aren't as likely to burrow. Hope you get rid if them.
Well I said burrow but its a little different than that. They suck your blood like ticks, but they are too tiny to actually pull or burn off. Covering them with nail polish suffocates them and they die or fall off or whatever. We grew up dealing with those things ( one of the joys of fishing and camping in damp areas) until we figured out the deodorant trick.

I don't really see the problem with using nail polish.
